Format: Hardcover
In this fast and furious book the comedian Ruby Wax bares her all. Abusive parents who contined abusing until she was way into late adulthood, lead her to rebel and shaped the ascerbic wit for which she's justifiably famous. With the help of her clearly loving and patient husband, three children and good friends, combined with her own intelligence she managed to emerge from the dark tunnel. A brilliant and in my view very brave description of someone who has known severe depression and breakdown and managed to overcome it. It is however written in such an intense style - for some readers it might just be a little too close to home. A very good read, but I would have liked to discover more about her professional life - but maybe that will come in a different book, for which there is definitely room ...

Ruby Wax has proved herself a wonderfully talented writer as she has done the nearly impossible by turning her own life's story into a book that's at once touching, bravely honest, sincere, funny and ENTERTAINING without a smidge of sentimentality. (Well, maybe just a smidge, the last page did bring on the tears.) Reading this book was like eating a Hershey's Special Dark chocolate bar, bittersweet and you can't get enough of it! In spite of all the bitter, difficult times, Ruby gets through it, heading all the time for the sweet, and "How sweet it is!"
YOU GO GIRL! I highly recommend this book. It's an easy read. It'll touch you heart...

This book is truly captivating. I couldn't put it down. Not a good choice for those who wanted to reach the depths of Ruby's soul, anxious to know her fears and troubles - but definitely a must for those who wish to share her hilarious life memories. Find yourself in fits of laughter with her experiences of life as an ugly, easily anipulated child. Paying club fees to the leader of a club in which she was the only member besides the leader, and having her first shag in a hotel room she sneaked into. Revealing any more would ruin the funny events of this book and I could not attempt to recreate the scenes as Ruby does! enjoy....

As an American living in London, I found myself fascinated with Ruby Wax and how one American celebrity could make such a following for herself (or pure dislike by many). I was intrigued to learn the history of her childhood, which she clearly describes yet never fully admits the physical torment she endured. It is wonderful to see what she has taken from a distructive childhood, created a very entertaining individual, dealing with her pain and coming through it all with forgiveness. If you are a Ruby Wax fan, or at all intrigued, I highly recommend reading this book.

If you are a Ruby Wax fan or even just generally like her, you must get this book! It is funny, excrutuatingly so at times, honest and very revealing. Ruby's tone is as it is often on TV and the gags have her signiture all over them. But there is more here - truth, revelation and reflection. Do read it. I read it in 4 hours! Could not let go.
If, on the other hand you happen to dislike Ruby Wax, then perhaps you would get a lot less out of it. But who knows...

really NOT as great as I hoped.Yes,it has her humour and wise cracks but Id hoped for a little more depth and revealing insight. It felt more like another medium to get her jokes out and therefore was all rather familiar.Felt a bit short changed and raced through it to get it over with.

Format: Paperback
I bought this book for research, as I needed to read the chapter on the Royal Shakespeare Company. I ended up reading the whole book, because it's transfixingly good and very funny and creative, while being searingly honest at the same time.

Carrie Fisher's note on the back of the book says, "If David Sedaris and Whoopi Goldberg had an illegitimate child it would be Ruby and from what I read about her family they would have made better parents."

It's really an extraordinary journey that Ruby has been on (her parents had serious psychological problems). But the book is super entertaining and funny. It doesn't read like a humdrum memoir at all -- it's always interesting and easy to read. Ruby knows how to pack a world of information into just a few words, so what you get is almost a kind of Reader's Digest version -- and a sidesplittingly funny one at that -- of her life, learnings, and insight.

One of the best chapters is about fame -- fantastic insight about the superfamous from someone who has interviewed them all, and also insight from the point of view of her own seduction by fame and attention. Who knew that Ruby Wax was a wise woman?

Ruby has written a fantastic book looking back over her awesome career and shares her struggles of growing up. I read it in two days - I just couldn't put it down. There are also some brilliant photos in the book - which were great but her descriptions are so wonderful that they weren't actually needed as I could imagine everything so clearly - but they added to it all in such a positive way.

It would seem Ruby has been incredibly brave and strong throughout her life. Never gave up fighting and couldn't have proved her vile parents more wrong. My favourite parts of this book were her descriptions of childbirth, and the way she described her parents shouting at her down the phone / in person "Vooby, Vot ver you thinking?" and her parents visits to London - causing endless havoc, which I am sure was awful at the time but the way she describes it is just jaw achingly funny.

I finished it, wiped a tear from my eye (so moved by it) and skipped into work - this is a truly awesome book. The author is even more awesome. Get reading. You will love it.

Make sure you also read her latest book Sane New World: Taming the Mind
