About the Author

The Design Museum's mission is to celebrate, entertain, and inform. It is the world's leading museum devoted to contemporary design in every form from furniture to graphics, and architecture to industrial design. It is working to place design at the centre of contemporary culture. It demonstrates both the richness of the creativity to be found in all forms of design, and its importance. Design is a hugely fertile field of inventive new work, as well as a key component underpinning the modern economy. It provides a means for understanding the contemporary world, and, potentially, for making it a better place.

Yep, this is the way a book should be.
Interesting to read and pictures of the highest quality.
And I love the work of John Pawson.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Little book 20 July 2012
Format:Hardcover
Good for a quick history and quick ideas also a great interview of an architect who designed his own house. Good for someone studying architecture and only takes an hour or so to read

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice little survey 7 Jun 2012

I'll agree that the book doesn't explain how to design a house (attempting to do so in 110 page book would be a fail, a priori), but it does present a set of interesting examples selected from a particular viewpoint centered on materials and situatedness.

The Pawson case study is OK at best, but aside from the "how to design a chair" book, the case studies in this series have been the weakest parts of the books.

1.0 out of 5 stars Book title is misleading 7 Mar 2011
By Thompson C. Ritchie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
this book contains almost no information on "how to design a house." it does, for some reason, contain a cursory history of building materials - including a few pictures of examples of each - and a case study of one of architect John Pawson's homes. it does not, however, contain any instruction on "how" to design, or even how to think about starting to design a house. i was able to read the entire book in less than an hour, and neither the information on the building materials nor the pictures of Pawson's building informed me of what this book's title suggested it would. i cannot design a house any better now than i could before having read the book.
