One of the best down-to-it tutorials I know on furniture design, as in applying the principles of classical proportion to historical period furniture. An excellent design guide to anyone caring about either reproduction of named styles, or just understanding the basic approaches to proportion.

Most of what accounts for "good" design is still based on the Renaissance, when aesthetic principles were codified according to underlying geometry that goes back as far as the Greeks. The books of Vitruvius and Palladio on architecture are still important reading today if you're to get the basics and the _vocabulary_ of proportion based design. This book takes those principles and applies them to furniture, with detailed analysis of European and American pieces from the last 500 years.

There are any number of books on making reproduction furniture, but I know of nothing even close to this one on designing it.

Gottshall is a must for furniture makers -- pro or hobbyist 18 May 2010

This is one of two books I recommend to all my furniture students as a fundamental guide to wooden furniture design as well as construction. I also recommend his other, later books as having the best drawings and construction detail of early American furniture styles.
