This small book is action packed, and well worth a read for those who want to make their presentations more lively and engaging. Jerremy Donovan has looked closely at what makes for a successful TED talk (as rated by the number of viewings), and provides us with a useful breakdown of features.
Perhaps as importantly, Jeremy has highlighted what does not work, so we are left with a reasonably clear framework of what has been shown to work. This is not a step by step to success, we are left having to craft our own presentations, and rightly that still leaves us with scope to put our personal stamp on what and how we present, just framed in a way that gets the message across in a meaningful way.
If there is one key point missing (hence the four not five stars), is that public speaking is a practical sport, and to be comfortable on stage means plenty plenty of practice (and I mean giving lots of presentations not just practising one speech), so that we are not only comfortable with what and how we are going to say something, but also have the skill and confidence to hold the floor. If you are looking for a safe public speaking club - try Toast Masters - where you can learn and be encouraged to try out all manner of public speaking formats ever before you get to the big stage and even bigger audience.
Jeremy's book definitely a good buy, but count on it as part of the journey rather than an end goal.

3.0 out of 5 stars A simple guide 24 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a fairly simple, basic guide to giving any presentation really. It doesn't meander and sticks fairly closely to its less than flashy menu. It is decently researched and written, with more than a few good nuggets. Better to read than not.

Everyone who has to make presentations can learn so much from this gem! The normal 18 minute limit on TED talks forces one to stand up, speak up and sit down!!

This book is clearly structured. It uses the widely watched and very successful TED talks as an example to guide the reader from finding a topic to giving a speech. This book is to the point, without any bulking or talking about himself and offers great content. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to give engaging speeches.

4.0 out of 5 stars One step away from perfect presentations 7 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Anyone who isn't a TED convert, this is a great way to combine the merits of condensed subject matter, with an understanding of how to do it. If you imagine you are giving a TED presentation when you present your material it may be the difference between an ordinary delivery and a memorable one.
