4.0 out of 5 stars It's NOT a romantic comedy 25 Mar 2005
By Inspector Gadget VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
New Line has sold this movie short and filed it as a Romantic Comedy but I must stress it is not. It's a teen drama with some romance and humor. Think of it as a teen version of American Beauty. Though it's all rather light, How to Deal does have some seriousness and important parts.

Mandy Moore (marry me?) is Halley Martin, a teenage girl who refuses to believe that true love exists (like me). Her best pal does but is heartbroken when her boyfriend drops dead on the football field of a heart defect. Halley's parents have split and found others, her sister is engaged to some guy and all they do is argue. It seems like the best way to deal with love is to avoid it.

All that changes when Halley meets Macon (stupid name) a geeky Star Wars nerd. He seems like a dweeb at first but his character grows on you, as he does Halley. He's played by Trent Ford and on the cover he's wearing a white vest and is marketed as a sexually neutral, non-threatening pretty boy (Orlando Bloom, Justin Timberlake etc) but that ain't him or his character at all and he never appears in a vest at any point in the movie. I expected to hate him just because of the cover but that ain't so. In the course of her steadily strengthening relationship with Macon (really, what a stupid name!) Halley learns how to deal with teen pregnancy, being a bridesmaid, her dope-smoking grandmother, car crashes, stepmoms, stepdads etc. Stuff that every kid learns. Real kids, not the kids that make love to pastries or live in mansions, which are the only 2 types of kids Hollywood thinks exist.

Taken from 2 separate novels by Sarah Dessen called 'Someone Like You' and 'That Summer' it's possible that How to Deal might have a sequel. And if it does its literary roots guarantee it will a better sequel than most.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to Deal= amazing 17 Feb 2004
Format:DVD
I own this film on region 1 (imported from America) and i can say that this film is amazing! for some reason this film is not getting released in the U.K why???? I am a huge Mandy Moore fan so i had to take the risk and buy it of the net imported from America and i can really say this film is great.
i was not dissapointed because yet again Mandy Moore proves she can do more than sing! Mandy plays a young hip high school student who hates the word love she's seen to many people get hurt by it. In her last year of high school her world turns upside down her parents are getting a divource her sister is getting married to the wrong guy, her crazy grandmother moves in with her, her best friend falls in love leaving Halley ( Mandy Moore) feel even more alone and worst of all she met him (Trent Ford) Macon who falls for her and Halley starts to realize what love is really about. This film is a teen drama with a splash of comedy thrown in! All teenagers will definately relate to Mandys charater and Mandy's character is so not her its not the sweet inocent girl next door its an individual high school student who is having huge problems in life and is unwilling to cope with all the presure of her parents seperation.
The cast is great for starters you have Mandy Moore ( A walk to remember, The Princess Dairies, All i Want) Allison Janney (The Hours, American Beuty, Drop Dead gorgeous) and Trent Ford a newcomer who has made brief appearances in (Gosford park, Slap her shes French).
This is an unmissable film one for all the family and Mandy Moore fans will not be dissapointed! A teen film thats real life so this means no snotty cheerleaders and no popular ones (great!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!!! 26 Jan 2006
Format:DVD
ok, i first heard of this DVD from the books it was based on, Someone Like You and That Summer. and i have to say, both them books are amazing so i had to see How To Deal. and i love. Mandy Moore has once again proved to the world that she is talented. How to Deal has to be one of the best films i've seen. it solves every problem teenagers have to face everyday.

Halley (Moore) leads a very hectic life, following her parents dirvorce, her sisters wedding, her dads new affair, her best friend lost her mind among other things... and Macon, the boy who won't take no for an answer. Halley doesn't believe in love, but can Macon change her mind?

follow Halley in this DVD as she tries to solve her problems which revolve around her, with her best friends help. as long as you have somebody there who believes in you, you know you'll be able to make it through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time To Deal 30 Jan 2011
Format:DVD
This film was very good. It was entertaining from start to finish, and provided a lot of good comedy all the way through. It also has a very happy ending, so if you're a fan of that, it's definately one to watch for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to Deal is amazing! 5 Nov 2010
Format:DVD
I read how "someone like you" and "that summer" during my summer holidays and loved them. I thought that the film would strggle to win over the people who had read the book before hand as it was a amazing book, but the the film was really good. Some of the story have been alterd quite a bit, Michals death is different and the ending is too but it didn't really change how muh i liked the film. I highly recommend the book and the film as they are both great!!
