Right. Just bought some decks and don't know what to do with them? This is the book. I was in that position, and worried about a) being patronised (I play a number of instruments quite well), or b) bored to death by a squillion obscure labels for music I don't like (happy euro trance etc.). Having looked about, this was the only DJ book on Amazon with no negative feedback, and it's for a reason; it really is very very good, for anybody at practically any level (unless you're Cash Money or somebody). Tells you literally everything (technique, technical stuff, business, music industry), doesn't talk down to you, doesn't obsess about style. The authors tell you again and again that it's all about the music, so if that's how you're looking at it as well, I can't recommend it highly enough.

As someone who absolutely loves music but is completely new to DJing, this book comes across very well without being patronising or elitist. The explanations of techniques is very clear and the sense of humour throughout the book is natural without being overbearing. It also makes the advice more memorable. After just a few days of reading the book, I am listening to my music in a different way and the art of DJing is a little less daunting as a result. Some of the advice, particularly the advice on blending, beatmatching and not preparing a whole set before a gig, is especially helpful.

As a newbie, I would happily recommend this book those starting out. Far from making you feel like an idiot for not knowing your bars from your phrases, it encourages anyone who loves music and wants to share their music with others to improve their skills and give DJing a try. A great book.

this is THE best book ive read on the art of djing. humorously written and straightforward.
not only does it hav the basics on technical ability, but the gem of the book is about actually being a dj and rightly points out you can only hav it good if ur heart is in the right place.
ive recommended it to everyone i know who is either a bedroom or professional dj.
run, go buy this book and put its experienced knowledge to good use, please!

I read all 290 pages of this little beauty in just 3 days, it was so good I had trouble putting it down, I am sure I will be refering back to the sheer avalanche of information contained therein for many years to come. It is very well constructed and the guys who wrote this book have a great sense of humour, they had me laughing aloud more times than your average simpsons episode!!!

Each main chapter has several extremely concise sub-chapters that give you the collective experience of the authors and every other page is adorned with quotes from the biggest DJ's in the business dispensing their piceless pearls of wisdom. Not one stone is left unturned, as they conspire to educate you in every concievable way, into potentialy becoming the next big thing.

Simply put, if you are thinking of becoming a DJ you need this book.

The book offers great advice even to the established DJ.
I found the key and phrase matching section of particular interest. What's great though is that even if you know a few tricks this book will guide you on to the right track and teach you a few more :) After reading the book I would say that I have improved in confidence and competance as a result.

This is an amazing Bible like DJ book i have ever read. I started off in the DJ world knowing absolute nothing about DJ'ing and what makes a good DJ and why DJ's DJ. I have read the book untold times and know so much information on DJ. It told me how to beatmatch and so much more. All was reveleaded through clear text and Phots as well as pictures of what was described in each passage. This book has also made me today go out and but "Last night a DJ saved my life" by the same authors. At the back of this vital DJ book are a list of cantacts, a ready made contract, and much more. This book has made me feel and be like a real DJ who plays for passion and love for the music. A definite must have.

I would have to agree like other reviewers that this is proabably one of the best, its probably the Dj bible. As expalined it starts from the very basic shape of the whole dj way down from past masters to tips from the pros in the dj world, pete tong, oakenfold, tall paul etc. It is helpful because it is clear and whilst balancing a level of honesty with the fact its not that starightforward to dj and to become a superstar! It punches out all the fills and blips and compacts them into 280pages of enjoyable read of tricks and tips. I fully recommened anyone who feels like messing with some records! (it even has tips on cd mixing too this book really is the bible for the next several years to come)
