A bit pricy but an excellent step by step guide,
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Crochet (Hardcover)
Crochet is quite an easy craft to pick up - to my mind much simpler than knitting with much prettier results. And it's not just for Grannies!!This book contains some excellent explainations of basic and more advanced techniques. There are lots of very clear colour photos and diagrams including examples of different styles and finished projects. Information on using different types of yarn is useful as is the list of yarn suppliers for those needed to create the various projects. The projects seem quite simple and straight forward and best of all are mostly quite modern & useful items. They include, net bags, mittens, a throw, filet crochet slippers, a baby blanket, cushions, hats, jumpers... The strangest section is about Broomstick Crochet - and yes it does involve using a real broomstick!!! The only criticism I have is the price, probably due to the coloured photos which make it more of a "coffee table book". It would tho' make a really nice present for someone into needlecrafts. I can also recomend "300 Crochet Stiches" for anyone who is a bit more advanced. This is just stitches (no patterns) but by the same publisher & with lots of beautiful colour photos. It's useful and good value too.

Not much use for an absolute beginner,
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Crochet (Hardcover)
As has already been said, this book does not have sufficient explanation for a total beginner. While it does explain the '2 strands as normal' mentioned in an earlier review a few pages before the stitch explanation, it doesn't explain half the terms used in the first pattern it provides, and I have had to spend time on the web to try and find out what it means!Having said that, some of the patterns look quite nice. It's just that I need help away from the book in making them... Don't buy this as a teach yourself from scratch book - it isn't worth the money.

Not clear enough,
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Crochet (Hardcover)
I am an absolute beginner, never picked up a hook before, and I could not learn to crochet from this book. The explanations are not clear enough. For instance, very early in the beginner's workshop, a slip stitch is introduced with the instructions "Insert the hook into the stitch, put the yarn over the hook as for a chain (yoh) picking up two strands as normal" Why is is normal to pick up two strands? This is the first mention of this and is not explained. It goes on "Draw the thread through all the loops on the hook - 1ss made. Slip stitches are normally used to link a stitch or group of stitches to another point. If you are using slip stitches to crochet a fabric, then pick up only the back, otherwise the fabric does not grow in height" What??? The diagram does not make this any clearer. It felt like a section had been missed out, or some instructions jumped. The book then goes on to a project using chain and slip stitches, which I could not begin to attempt. You are shown how to hold your hook and thread, but not what to do with your hands as the work gets bigger, or how to hold everything together. I think this book will be useful as I progress as there are some lovely patterns in it, but it will not teach me to crochet.
