5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference for knitters and fiber artists! 18 Jan. 2013

A wonderful resource not just for knitters but anyone interested in other fiber arts such as crochet and weaving as well.
This book emphasizes sizes and weights of yarns for hand and machine knitting but I believe would also be beneficial to people who crochet or weave.

Not only did the book contain information about sizing yarns it provides information about pattern sizing. Several charts that can be enlarged for better viewing are included in the book.
Ms McDonald says "Correct measurements and ease are critical to achieving the perfect knit fit". She explains how to get correct measurements and exactly what ease is and why it is so critical to the proper fitting of a garment.

My favorite chapter was about "grouchy yarns". I've dealt with a grouchy yarn or two over the years.
Ms. McDonald explains how to determine how the yarn you choose will behave when it is knit or how to tell if it will be difficult to knit with. Ms McDonald gives great tips like, when selecting yarns that will be knitted together, make sure you use care compatible yarns.

I also liked the links to recommended resources that she includes at the end of the book.

I would recommend this book to more advanced knitters or fiber artists interested in expanding their knowledge in the sizing of yarns, determining international sizing of yarns and garments, and knitting garments that fit well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful book before start knitting 17 Jan. 2013
By Victoria - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a very useful book about knitting details that you may not get around. I started knitting at very young age; I made my first sweater at age of 11 and I was very proud of it. Since then I did knitting a lot, for many years, for myself and for my children. Recently I taught my younger kids how to knit with different patterns. They asked, "mom, how do you know all that?"

For those who's interested seriously about knitting, this book will give some very specific and important details before starting with something big.
From my experience, I know what is that mean, when you start something big, spend a lot of time, then realize that size is not quite right, or after a thing is finished, you realize that yarn was not the best for this specific item.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to Convert Yarn & Sizes Internationally 18 Jan. 2013

I have been quilting and crocheting for years and saw this book which could come in handy for all my projects. I was amazed at all the quality information this book has to offer.

The book details how to get correct measurements ,converting your sizes, and this ebook gives instructions as to how to determine length and sizes from international measurements. The book does a great job of explaining what yarns work best with machines as opposed to Hand knitting yarns.

This book also has you covered when you are looking to convert measurements of all types. This book will truly be a helpful guide when you take on your next knitting project.

I think you will find a lot of value in this book and think it is a great guide to have when you are preparing your next project.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knit tightly with great information 17 Jan. 2013

This book is packed full of quality information! It shares about the different types of yarns, sizes, styles, and conversions needed for any knitting project you might undertake. It is useful for a beginning knitter, but also a great resource for a seasoned knitter who wants to expand and try some new knitting styles from different countries. I especially appreciated the international conversions and sizing information, especially for using designs in the metric system versus ours in inches. Great resource for knitters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Amount of Yarn Conversion Information 23 Jan. 2013
By Julia Busch - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a creative, hand (non-machine) knitter as well as machine knitter, who makes up my own patterns, has taught people how to use use knitting machines and converted hand-knit patterns for the home machines, as well as knitted garments for boutiques, I can tell you this book has as much information as you'll ever need. But the most important, before you definitely decide on the yarn you will be using, is making up your own swatch to see how the yarn reacts, its stretch, its memory, does it drape rather than cling. With a swatch, you can see if the needles (as well as the yarn) are giving you the results you want, your stitches per inch and how that converts to the pattern you are using or creating.

The author offers more than enough information to set up your own knitting business, even to the point of including links that offer more information.

Well done by an author who has done it, researched it, and can convey how to convert yarn and sizes internationally. Highly recommended.
