**** Conclusion
* There are several publishers that specialize in fine art, graphic art and visual arts- related instruction books. I own almost a dozen books on various subjects and, in my opinion, Focal Press is the best, by far. Furthermore, their "How To Cheat" series is the best of the subject-based series it publishes.
The first thing you should know about any of the "How To Cheat" titles is that its primary purpose is to teach lessons based on shortcuts and secrets (or, rarely used tools!)
HOW TO CHEAT IN PE8 is a must-have ONLY if you don't have an earlier version or have a comparable book that teaches Photoshop tips. And, although the book is geared toward the release of PE8, it is backwards compatible all the way back to PE3. Herein lies the problem.
Photoshop, the program, for the most part hasn't changed so dramatically that it would necessitate owning every release nor for the corresponding instruction book. I first started out with Photoshop 5.5 now with CS3; PE2 to PE5. I've seen many of the lessons presented here before, of course, not with the same pictures and layouts but the essentials.
** Why should I buy HOW TO CHEAT IN PE8?
There are a couple of very attractive reasons why, at least, you may want to consider this amongst the books you keep for inspiration and reference.
Enticing lessons--the authors chose very enticing subjects to explore. Almost every chapter is so visually appealing; I immediately want to try to see if I can emulate it. I was often left wondering how might I use some of a design or how to manipulate a particular step.
Lesson Layout--the layout throughout the book makes learning a subject very quick. Each section is separated in a few short paragraphs. The length of the paragraph is the same as the image. No more reading several pages and flipping back to see what the writer was referring to.
Mastering techniques--mastering the techniques within the book enables one to have a considerable amount of Photoshop expertise. Why? Because, with the exception of specialized tools, PE has the same basic foundation as the full version of Photoshop.

**** How To Cheat, the series, is the best self-directed series for any kind for an artist entering the graphic or visual arts-field. And although Adobe updates their suites every 2 years, there are dozens of titles from different publishers and all of the available information on how to use any Adobe software (Photoshop included) is abundant and I might even go as far to say, redundant.
However, if you can only have one instruction book on Photoshop instruction or for Photoshop Elements, in particular, then HOW TO CHEAT IN PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 8 should be it.
