Perfect Gingerbread House How-To 3 Dec. 2008

"How to Build a Gingerbread House" is a well-written, excellent cooking/crafts book. Compared to other gingerbread cookbooks, the organization makes eminent sense. With separate sections on decorating roofs, windows, doors, etc., you can visualize all kinds of possibilities. The instructions are thoughtful and comprehensive. The beautiful full-colored photos illustrate both the "big picture" and important details. I particularly like the examples that extend gingerbread houses throughout the year.

After my 5 year grandson recently visited the George Eastman House (Rochester NY) to see the exquisite display of gingerbread houses, I promised I would help him build a house. I borrowed all the gingerbread books available in our county library system. Most gingerbread books are "okay", but in my estimation, not worth purchasing. Based on the description of "How To Build A Gingerbread House", I decided to order it from Amazon.

When the book arrived in the mail, imagine my delight when my little grandson (who seems to run and play nonstop) sat down with me to look at the book's photographs. We had a "serious" discussion deciding which construction and ornaments we would use to construct our house ;-)

My compliments to the author, Christina Banner.

Great Book 28 Sept. 2009
By Joe - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is a great book for fun weekend projects for the family. Some have stated that they would like to have seen more advanced houses like at the Grove Park Inn, but I can tell you from having tried to make big houses that there is no way to put those instructions in a book. Instructions for one house would have been bigger than this book and a lot of it is improvised. Personally, the one star review is totally uncalled for. Read the back cover. It clearly states 1 basic house plane and delivers on the rest of what it states.

But back to the book, the steps are all laid out for someone to follow and presents a lot of neat ideas for people to create their own or give it a different look than the houses presented in the book. The book is full of photos. There seems to be numerous pictures on every page that corresponds to what you are working on and every photo is in color. There has to be over 200 photos in this book. The timeline is a major help on knowing how long to expect at each step and allows me to schedule my house. My personal favorite is the Easter and will be doing this with my daughter this coming Easter. A must have for gingerbread fans.

Just okay 9 Jan. 2009

I was very much looking forward to this book because I've watched the Food Network coverage of the 2004 National Gingerbread House Competition as well as the 2005 Food Network Gingerbread Challenge. However this book is geared more for the person just starting out in gingerbread houses. She has some nice ideas for embellishments, practically all the houses are the SAME - just different theme, not change in structure. I was hoping for more considering her background. I was hoping for more elaborate designs, patterns and geared more for the more intermediate to advanced gingerbread house enthusiast.
So if you are just starting out - I'd give this book 4 stars. Christina, if you read this - I really hope you consider writing another book with more creative structures, patterns and ideas.

A great choice - my house turned out beautiful! 5 April 2009
By Lori E. Russell - Published on Amazon.com
This book was a great choice for me. I was looking for a book that would guide me through the process of making a gingerbread house from start to finish. I couldn't have been happier! There are several recipes included, and complete instructions for eight different houses. I made the Easter House and it turned out great. Especially helpful are the 'pointers for success' and 'tips' that are found throughout the book. Since I had never made a gingerbread house before, I also really liked the 'timeline'. It was very useful since it let me see at a glance each step involved in making the house. I'm already looking forward to making my next gingerbread house!

Great Book with Coverage On All Areas of Building 12 Jan. 2009

We used this for making our Christmas gingerbread house and it was great in all the information it provided (including edible glitter to make snow look shimmery). The only thing is, while I expected it to take time, baking the gingerbread is very time consumming. You have to go through a few steps process in baking. Overall, I'm glad I purchased it and plan on using it for many years to come.
