Despite the title leaving it well down the search engine page, this is a truly wonderful book. It gives an entirely different perspective on writing for those at any stage of the craft. I've not read very far yet but what I have read has been illuminating and thoroughly interesting. For the first time I find myself doing the activities she suggests instead of just skipping over them.

I would definately reccommend it for those who want to take a fresh perspective on their own writing. However, this book does not look at crafting writing. That will come in Baig's second book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to every writer's library 12 Dec. 2010
By Lowell Moon - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
There are shelves full of helpful texts on characterization, setting, plot or dialogue. But this wonderful book offers something more fundamental - tools to build the skills necessary for successful communication from writer to reader.
Barbara Baig knows that writing skills are best acquired through focused exercise and she provides a clear and accessible course. She has a real gift for rendering complex ideas into digestible bites, and she provides exercises that target each key idea, insuring that readers internalize the material.
This practical guide is really more of a reference book, to be read and reread. The exercises are meant to be practiced over and over, so that the skills they build move into the writing muscle, available to the writer without conscious summoning.
Anyone seriously committed to writing well will benefit from a careful reading of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical advice for aspiring writers 10 Oct. 2010
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Barbara Baig teaches people to write, day in and day out.

It shows. This book about how to write is practical and down-to-earth. Writing is not some dreamy artistic state achieved by the talented few, she makes clear, but a craft that any of us can learn to perform competently.

And with her advice to follow, that's exactly so. She's taken a year's worth of writing lessons and distilled them into clear, inspiring prose. Anyone who follows this advice will finish the book a better writer than they started.

Have you ever thought about writing but didn't know where to start? This book will give you the encouragement you need to take up pen and paper and start. Have you tried writing only to give up because it wasn't going well according to your critical self? This book is for you. This book is like taking a workshop with a great teacher and then taking the teacher home with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, this book is here! 7 Sept. 2010

I had the great fortune to take writing classes a number of years ago with Ms. Baig at Harvard Divinity School. I've been wishing for a book written by her since then, perhaps as many as 10-15 years ago. Every so often I've surfed the internet to see if she's written a book. I was thrilled to find that finally she had, and pre-ordered in April. Today I received the actual book!

I've just flipped through the book, and am happy to say that it's got all of the great techniques I remember from Ms. Baig's classes, as well as many we didn't get to. I cannot wait to use them for creative writing instead of for writing non-fiction.

One thing I'm certain of. Ms. Baig's classes got my writing flowing so easily that I could often write a first draft of a sermon as fast as I could type it into the computer. It doesn't get better than this. Enjoy, everyone!

BTW, I haven't seen Ms. Baig since taking the classes years ago, so this is not just a glowing review by a friend. <g>

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful writing guide 27 April 2011
By J. D. Jenkins - Published on

I checked this book out from the library, because I feel called to be a writer but often have nothing to say. Baig's exercises are designed to help writers develop content for their writing, and I found them so helpful that I purchased a copy for myself. Buy this book if you need help getting your creative juices flowing.
