3.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to being a Gentleman, 28 Dec 2000
By A Customer
As an introduction, this book is a great starting place. It's written as a series of statements about gentlemanly behaviour interspersed with longer descriptionw where needed. If you're looking for a complete guide however, this book is certainly no replacement for the likes of "Emily Post's Etiquette".

My only criticism of this book is it's American slant on being a Gentleman. For example, under the section describing hats, it talks at length about when it is and isn't appropriate to where your favourite baseball cap and type of suit you can wear it with! Also, it describes the various forms of address for Senators and Governors and the like, but neglects Lords, Dukes and other members of the aristocracy (not that anyone needing this book is likely to meet them...).

In all, a great first book on the subject which should encourage the reader to move on to more substantial works.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource, 22 Jul 2003
By Kurt A. Johnson (Marseilles, IL USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
In this book, author John Bridges gives his advice on how to be a gentleman. For the most part, the book is built around a series of short homilies, each of which covers a subject such as: A Gentleman Attends a Wedding, How to Seat a Table, How to Leave a Tip, and much more. Connecting the homilies are a series of maxims that give advice in the form of: a gentleman does not..., a gentleman keeps..., etc.

While some of this book sounds out-of-date in the modern scene, containing as it does so much information on formal dining, it is a goldmine of advice for all social occasions. If you wish to polish your image, then I would recommend this book to you. It is short, and to the point, and very informative.

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative to an extent, 21 May 2006

A lot in this book is common sense and being considerate towards other people...so if you are looking for a book to completely revamp your image then this is not the one. Also, as the author is an American, understandably some stuff is not pertinent to the UK public. Yet, it does contain some gems on being a gentleman and makes a quick n interesting read in under two hours.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful.
I'm afraid that this book was the most patronising that I have ever read. I was looking forward to reading it, but it treats the reader like a child without basic manners.
