Book Description

An international bestseller since 1992, this is a humorous look at what makes up one of the world's most colorful characters: the Carioca--those charming inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro, written by a U.S. native who has made Rio her home for more than thirty-eight years. If you dream of blending in with the locals while visiting Rio, help is at hand. Natives of Rio have a unique way of maintaining an up-beat samba-like swing while dealing with the woes of the day-to-day in paradise. How to Be a Carioca will help any traveler understand the endearing Carioca attitude about life and gives an insider's view into the unique daily rituals of the charming natives who populate this marvelous city.

5.0 out of 5 stars So funny and so true! 20 Jan. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've read this book several times and I can't get sick of it. It portrays the Cariocas (people from Rio) using the point of view of a gringa who lives in Rio. It's a fantastic book, so funny and so down-to-earth and true! Unfortunately some things are out of date (maybe a revised edition should be written?!) and there are quite a lot of spelling mistakes (that the paperback doesn't have, only the Kindle edition); however, it is still very entertaining. I lived all my life in Rio and I can say its view of the traditions in Rio and in different parts of Brazil is extremely faithful and well described. I totally recommend this book to people before, during and after visiting Rio!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and informative 25 May 2011

I find this little book a gem. Not only does it provide you with information that is useful, but I love the humorous writing style with a touch of kind irony. The only problem is that after reading it I wish I was in Rio already, but unfortunatelly that has to the meantime I am happy to have this book to bring me closer to what it feels like being in Rio.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun 14 Feb. 2013

Having spent three weeks in Rio, one during Carnival and two outside Carnival time I really enjoyed this book. As prep prior to arrival in Rio it may be of slight use but I tihnk it is more useful as amusing holiday read or post Rio as a reminder of good times.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring book 26 July 2013

I did not find this book very interesting at all - it would be OK for younger people in their twenties, thankfully it was short so did not take long to read. Its not very amusing either.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to be a Carioca 1 Nov. 2009

What a fun book. I purchased this book after reading John Updike's novel, Brazil. He had used some terms and descriptions that I had to research, e.g., ("any threat to going to Brasilia terrified a true Carioca"). Then the 2016 Olympic city was chosen- not that I will be going there, but I wanted to get a feeling for the city itself. I loved the tongue in cheek format and also the chapter with the pronunciation of the Portuguese words. Very much worth the price if you are a Carioca in your secret heart!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic tongue-in-cheek exposé of Carioca culture 5 Nov. 2009

I've purchased this book three times already, because it is so good that people keep stealing it from me. I originally bought it at the Rio airport (back when it was still called Galeão), and finished before I boarded my flight to Miami. Made me burst into laughter every page. It's a worthwhile read whether you've lived there your whole life or if you're just curious about Rio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny 1 Feb. 2013

This is a great book for someone who wants to understand the mentality of people from Rio. Probably best for people who are at least somewhat familiar with South American culture. Some of the jokes may be lost for someone who's completely unfamiliar with Latin culture. Definitely worth reading. I laughed so hard...

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and Entertaining Read! 13 Aug. 2012
By Steven Byrd - Published on

There is so much useful content, it would be impossible to cover all of it in one review. The author covers a wide variety of topics that get to the real meat of each issue. It covers the the origin of the term Carioca (a term the native Indians gave to the white Portuguese foreigners), what to do to prepare for Brazil, slang, cultural customs, transportation, dealing with money, food and drinks, how to park your car, romance in Rio, and much more.

The illustrations are very funny as well!
