There are untold Monsters in this world and we must defend ourselves against them. Britannia and her Empire are threatened. For, in remote and hidden places, strange and deadly creatures still lurk. Scorpion-tailed Manticores prey upon our soldiers in the Persian hills, and in the snowy mountains of Tibet the legendary Yeti waits in ambush for the unwary Himalayan traveller. High in the heavens predatory Kraken patrol the skies and deep underground the mysterious Shide lie slumbering, ready to stalk our dreams. And yes, even within these emerald isles, Monsters linger - Vampires, Lycanthropes and Ghoti… I, Major Jack Union, know these creatures inside out, indeed have spent a lifetime searching for them, hunting them down and wiping them from the face of the globe. Discover within these pages the truth about the secret world of Monsters - and how to defeat them.

Read this book carefully and keep it close at hand - your life and the Empire depend upon it!

About the Author

Major Jack Union is the son of an unknown hero of Kabul and a London brothel madam, Belle Union. Jack earned his first military stripes fighting with the Royal Horse Artillery on Mars. His background stopped a public rise through the ranks but as a political (or spy) he found freedom and achieved the rank of Major. This position allowed him the scope to protect the British Empire from Monsters, without too many question raised. Jack lives in apartments attached to his mother's Regents Park business with his batman, Kent.

Jack Union is the alter ego of Kit Cox, stand-up comedian, leading exponent of Steampunk and counsellor for British soldiers returning from war zones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Victorian Style Boys-Own Adventure 2 May 2012
The thrilling combination of supernatural big game hunter, boys owns adventure stories and witty Victorian literary jokes make this manual both a fun and clever read. A sturdy hardback with gold embossed cover, it's small enough to pop into your rucksack when off adventuring and big enough to really appreciate the spotters guide illustrations and "photographs" of assorted strange and supernatural creatures.

Written through the eyes of Jack Union, Queen Victoria's Monster Hunter, as a collection of short stories and naturalists jottings, the reader is sucked into a surprising world of sinister forces beyond our control, brutal fights to the death and lucky escapes that had me sitting on the edge of my chair, and then wincing in sympathy. Each Monster gets its own chapter, with tips on how to hunt it, equipment needed and habitat as well as the story anecdote during which the beasty meets it's demise (or not...)despite being a staunch vegetarian of long standing, I couldn't help but cheer!

I also really enjoyed spotting all the cameo characters, some just mentioned in a throw away comment, and these included all sorts from classic Victorian literature, pulp adventure fiction and everyday life, though it is also perfectly possible to read the stories for the action alone, these add a depth and interest for those well versed in Victorian Classics. See how many you can spot!

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin 2 July 2012
I really liked this and found it to be an enormous help when having a bit of a quiet panic about all the monsters from which we need to defend our realm....

The book is designed to be read all the way through or by picking at chapters here and there at your leisure, it's very snacky but a really good read if you go right through it in one go, like I did. The writing is very entertaining, very witty and full of a bit of genuine adventure. I loved the how-to tips, illustrations and accompanying stories for each monster, and actually found out quite a lot about the monsters of Victorian fiction so I guess it was educational too, even though I didn't expect it! Jack Union comes across as a really strong character. I think the book should appeal to lovers of the Flashman series and has a pretty broad appeal beyond the steampunk genre (which I'm a fan of) even though steampunk is where this little jewel has its roots.

Great fun all round. And the cover looks so pretty, too...
