Product Description

Well what can you say about the Gents that hasn't been said before? Starting off their music career as far back as 1980, they cut their teeth, so to speak, in the working men's clubs of South and West Yorkshire and the north-east of England. This was a hard slog as they had to play to a mixed audience, but over those early years they made a name for themselves as they stood out from the rest of the acts on that circuit as they played original and also mighty fine and catchy songs amongst the covers required in the clubs. What they had was an image and musical ability that made them stand out and above their counterparts on both the club and mod scenes. Word quickly spread and the Mods caught on to them and started following them to every gig. One of those young Mods was Gents-mad Simon Curtis aka 'Slick' who has been instrumental in persuading them to finally allow this release and then putting it together. Bigger and better gigs followed and soon they were playing the mid-sized venue circuit when they ventured away from the clubs and onto the original and mod/scooter circuit. In 1985 they released their debut vinyl album How it all Began on the Lambs to the Slaughter label, eleven tracks of pure bouncy tunes that will have you singing all day. The Gents' main songwriter, Martin Burton was a lyrical master and under the watchful eye of the band's manager, his brother Paul Burton, they looked certainties to go far. After a second vinyl album, nine 7" singles and nearly ten years, the band called it a day in February 1989. How it all Began LP New Direction / In my Dreams / Revenge / the Faker / Le Pink Panther / Day to Day / the Gent / How it all Began / Tomorrow Never Comes / Don't Turn Away / Shout! Bonus Tracks You are the Sun / Heat of the Sun / Don't Turn Away (remix) / Tomorrow Never Comes (remix) / Million Miles from Home / She's Got Something

Seeing The Gents live at Pontefract Labour Club (now sports and social) in 1983 i was still only 15 years old (so do the math now a forty something) and wasnt into mods or their music but this was a real band who could play their own songs, this cd was originally on vinyl from 1985 but sounds as brilliant now as it did then, i was at the relaunch gig in Doncaster on the 14/10/11 and they went down a storm (sadly without keyboard player Steve Kendell) the songs are catchy and easy to sing along to but have great hooks, songs like 'Revenge' and 'Faker' should have been hits and its been long overdue, do yourself a favour have some fun and buy this cd..... even my 11 year old son who is hip n trendy keeps borrowing it to play!
Great songs, great times, begin your experience with The Gents - Doncaster's finest.

I've had this on vinyl for years and occasionally dust off the record player to give it a whirl. Now available on CD - brilliant.
If you liked the '60's' pop/soul sound of revival mod you will LOVE this album. Easily on a par with Makin Time and The Times, The Gents probably had one of the more authentic sounds of the mid 80's revival bands, even if a little commercial.
Definatley my favourite album of the 80's revival set - alongside the Makin Time album they defined the mod sound of the mid 80's. It's such a shame that the mainstream mod revival was pretty much over by '82. Had The Gents released this album in '79 everyone would have heard of them.
Absolutley brilliant album and one to be listened to over and over again.
