How to Afford Time Off with Your Baby: 101 Ways to Ease the Financial Strain is an excellent book. If you are pregnant and wondering how you will make ends meet if you don't go back to work, you should definitely check it out.

I get fed-up with the tired old tips that come out again and again in many features on saving money when you have a family, and Becky Goddard-Hill has done a great job in coming up with realistic and practical original advice for cash-strapped parents and mums to be. What's more, she hasn't fallen into the trap of many yummy-mummy journalists who were obviously living on a much higher budget than most of us in the first place and offer somewhat unrealistic advice.

What Becky does offer is straightforward practical tips on subjects like:

10 things you should borrow for your new baby
birthdays and baptisms on a budget
looking after yourself for next to nothing
low cost activities for the pre-school years
earning money while staying off work
and an inexpensive Christmas
You can tell that Becky has tested out her own advice in real life.

This is a brilliantly written summary of so many areas of early baby-dom and beyond. Not just for new-borns it's a book you will seek advice from for years to come and reinforces the idea you're not the only one wondering what the options are! Packed with both lists and suggestions, it's great to pick up and flick in any spare moment and will remain beside my bed for many years to come!

I am glad I borrowed this book from the library and didn't buy. I read cover to cover and found the advice very 'out of balance'. Unusually the mum earns much more than the dad, the mum stays at home. No mention is made of any attempts to increase the dad's salery. They take a 6 month holiday from mortgage payments. Mum manages to stay at home because her in-laws, parents and extended family pay for lots of activities for the children. When her children pester for an item she asks Granny to buy it for them! Pocket money given to the children is not saved but spent on groceries! She's apparently on a tight budget and advocates picnics in the park but also states she takes her son out for breakfast in a cafe and magazine weekly! She gets her friend to pay for her slimming class!?
