Product Description

Product Description

In this companion volume to How to Use, Adapt and Design Sewing Patterns the author explains in easily accesible terms how to decode knitting patterns and how to modify that pattern so that it can be shaped to fit a wide range of individuals. With sections on making a pattern from an exisiting garment, how to write up a pattern, how to change necklines, body shapes and sleeves as well as adding texture and embellishment to garments, the knitter is taught how to develop their own patterns, modernise and generally increase their knowledge of knitting styles. Filled with step-by-step sequences, a list of useful websites and suppliers, and a gallery which will introduce the reader to some of the leading knitwear designers, this is a practical book with diagrams and photographs. Even the relatively new knitter will be able to follow the instructions and develop her skill in knitting. A great companion to our Knitty Gritty and Stichopedia books.

By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This book has a good basics section but is sadly let down by the designs in the book, particularly in the embellishments section - it's hideous. It's good on instruction for adapting shaping, necklines, body hugging fits etc, but the designs featured do not inspire. This book also relies heavily on creating a toile. Toiles are more commonly used in the dressmaking industry and I prefer, as a knitwear designer, to work out my patterns using maths and graphs. It does include brief instructions on how to adapt a pattern from a t-shirt that fits well. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

I bought this book as i wanted to create my own style jumper. I had idea's, but wanted different neckline and sleeves other than my pattern i am using for the overall knitting stitch pattern. I am a novice knitter. I read through this book in about 10 mins. The problem is i did not want to make a toile 1st, thats more work and sewing not knitting. The neck line i wanted was not in the book, nor were the sleeves i wanted to knit. I have totally lost confidence in finishing this now. I am half way through knitting the back, now i dont know how to do the rest of it. I bought three patterns i thought i could take some of the patterns of each and the book would help...er NO..It does not.!! If anyone reading this knows how to help me create this jumper let me know. i will explain what i wanted to do ok. 1st it has a lacy pattern, i wanted it much longer than the pattern i have. I wanted to create a off the shoulder, with a leather strap holding one side in place. I also wanted long sleeves. The pattern i have is a summer top ( hence the lacy effect. ) but it has short raglan sleeves, and a neckline very off the shoulder on both sides with two knitted straps. It is all done in black D.K.wool. I am quite gothic lol. Anyone out there who can help ? without having to buy another book, which does not help me ??

Not so useful 20 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
Far too complicated for simple soul like me.
May suit someone with a bigger brain.
I've passed it on.
