The Lake District is undoubtedly stunning and its great houses compliment the inherent beauty of Cumbria; this book entices the reader with its beautiful photography and informative narrative which combine to give a wonderful flavour of the houses, their setting and their history. Read it before you visit and you will be well prepared to maximise the occasion, read it after your visit and memories will flood back.Every hotel and B&B should have a copy on their coffee table for their guests' perusal. A quality piece of work which is justifiably receiving good reviews.

Many books contain sumptuous photographs of colourful gardens, historic houses, mouth-watering food or furry mammals. Demand is invariably brisk. Most are however undermined by a lightweight text. Some publishers clearly believe that intelligent writing and avoidance of cliché distract attention from visual splendour.

So how refreshing to find an expert photographer in tandem with an authoritative writer - one who avoids banal comment and proves thoughtfully informative about twenty-one evocative houses of the Lake District. If a stingy publisher dumped all Clive Boursnell's illustrations, Christopher Holliday's text would remain worth buying - and vice versa. The combined skills of both demand instant purchase!

For those of us who are unashamedly parochial it is comforting to have a book available that gathers all these houses of the Lake District in one volume without having to wade through all the counties of England. This book feels good in the hand and opening it is the next best thing to entering the actual buildings. The text is informative and accessible and the photos rich in colour. For anyone living in the area with an interest in buildings it is an essential book; for anyone further away it will make a visit seem imperative. Buy it for someone you love!(That could include yourself...)

Great value for a top-notch publication
AN EXCELLENT BUY. Both before a house is visited (loads of information, history, "look out for ..." hints); and after a visit (marvellous pictorial record - photos are superb.)
