Book Description

30 April 2009 England's Living History
The Tudor period is still personified by the houses that remain standing in our towns and villages. Black and white timber framed buildings 'jettying' out between more recent bland structures, and rambling rows of quaint cottages around a green. This book sets out to explain the rich range of houses built during the Tudor period.

5.0 out of 5 stars None better, or more fun to read 13 Sep 2010

I cannot recommend this book series highly enough! Each volume contains a treasure trove of usefula and fascinating information about each type of architecture, and what's more, is fully illustated - not just a windbag of text. No, these books are fun! There are a wealth of diagrams, fully labelled, plus lots of photos to explain all those large and small features of a period house, much of which I hadn't noticed and very much wish I had. These books are an excellent first choice for any student of historical architecture, house renovators, and dolls house modellers, especially the latter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice reference work 30 Jun 2011
By L. Schattman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This small paperback (about 6" x 8" with 63 pages) is a very nice guide to Tudor architecture, style and construction. It is profusely illustrated with black and white photographs, line drawings, sketches, and floor plans. It describes the social context that gave rise to these houses, explains construction methods, and defines architectural terms. It is well-organized with concise text - all in all, a very good reference for this style.
4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful little guide! 25 Dec 2012
By M. Sheherd - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This little guide packs more useful information into 59 pages than most books seem to do in over 100 pages. The writer makes no waste of words and most everything is accompanied by a wonderful, albeit small illustration to drive home the main points. The basic Tudor house is viewed through several lenses; what changed in society to give rise to the Tudor style; what was it constructed out of; the details of the various interior spaces; it's decline and revival and features of revival structures. Were it slightly longer and had great photographs to accompany the illustrations it would receive 5 starts.
