Format:Audio CD
My fault I suppose for buying this on chance but .... I came to Jazz because I was bored with rock/alt/indie or whatever, particularly the dumb rock steady 4/4 beat, at least Jazz (as I understand it) has, or should have, polyrhythms and syncopation just for starters. Alas, this album is deficient on all these counts. There is an overall 'droney' feel to this, the sax never varies tone between tracks, and one track in particular sounds like the sad ghost of prog rock - droney clashing guitar chords against (wait for it.... drum roll...) 7 minutes of a rock steady 4/4 beat. (thumpa thumpa thumpa...) FFS!!! Well yes but no thanks: "It's Jazz Jim, but not as we know it."

WORDS ALONE CANNOT CONVEY

THE MUSICIANS HAVE PLAYED TOGETHER FOR A LONG TIME AND ARE SKILLED ENOUGH TO BE IN THE RARE ZONE WHERE THEY HAVE A TELEPATHIC CONNECTION TO PLAY AT THIS LEVEL. HOUSEPLANT IS THAT INTERTWINED AND THE MUSICIANS ARE CONNECTED AT A LEVEL THAT IS ASTOUNDING TO MY SENSES. THE BAND IMPROVES TENFOLD OVER PREVIOUS ALBUMS, AND DOGS OF GREAT INDIFFERENCE WAS A COMPLEX GORGEOUS ALBUM. HOW CAN I DO HOUSEPLANT JUSTICE. THAT'S THE REASON FOR THE TITLE FOR THE REVIEW. HOUSEPLANT HAS ENTERED THE ADDICTION LEVEL ON THE RECEPTORS IN MY BRAIN. WHAT HAPPENS WITH THE NEXT ALBUM-A SINGULARITY? IF SO, BE SEEING YOU MUCH LATER ...
