Set in the years before the Battle of Hastings the story follows the trials and tribulations of Aelfraed, a young boy who aspires to be a warrior. When his uncle, Aethelward, takes him to join the warriors of Harold Godwinson, his life is irrevocably changed. The novel culminates in the battle of Stamford Bridge when the Housecarls defeated the last of the Vikings, Harald Hadrada.

More About the Author

I was, for over 35 years, an English teacher. After running a successful Educational Consultancy company for four years I decided to return to an early passion, writing. As I love the works of C.S Forester, Simon Scarrow, Alexander Kent and Bernard Cornwell I wrote my Roman historical fiction novels. Although there will be more historical novels to come, I have written a novel aimed at 10-15 year olds, Great Granny's Ghost; I have been touring schools which have purchased class sets working with young people on the themes in the book. There are now 10 books in the Sword of Cartimandua series which cover the Roman occupation of northern Britannia from 69 AD to 123 AD. I have also now written a trilogy set around the time of the Battle of Hastings. The first on in the series is Housecarl. My next two projects are: a trilogy set in 6th Century Britain called the Wolf Warriors- the first title is Saxon Dawn with four more titles; my second project is a travelogue called Backpacking at 63- by train to Istanbul.I have just published 2 books about the American Civil War loosely based on the exploits of the Grey Ghost, John Mosby. My books are now owned and published by Sword Books Ltd, My website is

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read 14 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"Housecarl" is a good read. The characterization was strong, the plot was good and the scenery was atomospheric. There were quite a few typos in the kindle version, however, that sometimes affected readability. This was only a small problem but it kept me from giving the review five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldnt put it down 6 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I don't know how historically correct this book is, but to me it doesn't matter, once I started I became engrossed in the world of the Housecarl and couldn't put the book down.

Brilliant, a real page turner

Pretty good story if you can battle past the typos and grammar howlers! On the second book at the moment, third waiting in the wings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book 13 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Enjoyed it a lot and would recommend it to others. An interesting perspective from the Anglo Saxon side as most of the books in this area tend to focus on the victorious Normans. A few minor gripes such as Edgar the Atheling being referred to as Harold son when he was not.

Overall recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trilogy 14 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What can I say, from this I've bought and read the other two books, it's a pity more people don't subscribe to an English hero even that long ago.

4.0 out of 5 stars A really good story 20 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story and the characters are excellent, I really like this type of Saxon historical fiction and have read a number of works by different authours and this story more than holds its own. However as many others have commented it is let down by errors within the presentation of the text, indeed some of the chapters were quite hard to read because of it.It is a shame as all they need to be up there with the very best is a good trip to the proof readers. Despite this I will certainly read the next instalments at some point.
