Synopsis

When Tom Winston's (Cary Grant) estranged wife dies in a sudden accident, he's left alone to raise their three children. Problem is, Elizabeth, David and Robert Winston haven't seen hide nor hair of their father in ages, and they aren't about to let him play the perfect parent now. Tom has to win his bratty brood's respect first. Along comes Cinzia Zaccardi (Sophia Loren), a lovely long-legged lady who's willing to do anything to escape her strict father. So, she poses as a maid and goes to work for Tom as a live-in nanny. Before they know it, Tom, Cinzia and the kids will be living as one big, crazy family.

4.0 out of 5 stars great old style chick flick!, 5 Mar 2004
By F. Mclachlan "fee" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
spoilt rich girl who longs to lead a normal life, takes up a job as a nanny/housekeeper with a widowed, wealthy businessman who doesn't know her secret...
This is the kind of film that Sleepless in Seattle and While You Were Sleeping try to be! Good as those films are, they still can't match this one. The chemistry between Cary Grant and Sophia Loren is amazing (according to Hollywood gossip it spilled over into real life too!), the comedy is timed to perfection and the lavish sets and wardrobe is impeccable as always in those days. If you love the old style romantic comedies, you won't be disappointed!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not one of his finest........, 25 Oct 2000
This review is from: Houseboat [VHS] [1958] (VHS Tape)
Cary Grant has few opportunities in this film to be the suave urbanite seducer we know and love him for - after all he has three children, no wife and an interfering family to cope with! Having said that, he shows his unfailing comic timing and while Sophia Loren is playing as usual, Sophia Loren, there are some nice touches. She's on the run and takes a job as housekeeper, mending hearts and bringing the family together. The dance scene is well done, giving Grant some great lines and allowing Sophia to shimmy around in a tight gold frock. Of course everyone lives happily ever after and it's amusing - it's just not one of his best. Sophia Loren is mis-cast - you can't help thinking that Ingrid Bergman would have done it so much better - but well, has Cary Grant ever been in a stinker?

5.0 out of 5 stars All time best, 10 Oct 2003
By A Customer
I love this film. The chemistry between the beautiful Sophia Loren and the dashing Cary Grant is entralling. The songs are sweet and the conversation between Cary and his son sticks with you. The relationships build gently and with humour and the pompous country club set are dealt a suitable blow by Sophia. This is a great film

This is a typical firm for the whole family, to be watched on a Sundayafternoon. Not one of the best of Grant's films.

4.0 out of 5 stars A classic feel-good movie.
The glamourous Sophia Loren, the on-screen chemistry and the feel-good factor all combined make this a classic must have.

A little thin on the plot but other factors compensate.
