I enjoyed this book hugely, and it shows a completely different view of the war, not to mention asking very important questions about the way we see other people in wartime - but in a completely unpreachy way. It's a very good, exciting read, quite unputdownable, with engaging characters, and I'd recommend it to anyone buying books for their kids, who I'm certain will love it!

House of Spies is a captivating story for children and adults alike, I read it in one sitting and was unable to put it down.The characterisation is very strong in the characters of Harry and Pip and although it deals with mature issues is written in a child friendly style. I was very impressed by the anti-war theme which occurs so naturally without moralising through the action, in the character of Harry's father severely maimed at Dunkirk and through Pip's own thoughts, delightfully captured in diary form. While the story has a very salutary theme there are lots of exciting adventures and touches of genuine humour. One feels that the author must have experienced this period herself as no-one who had not could have written so realistically about this period of the 20th century.
