Product Description

Akitsu Masanosuke is a timid ronin on his way to Edo from the countryside when he accidentally encounters a playboy named Yaichi, who asks him to be his bodyguard. But it turns out that Yaichi is actually the leader of a group of bandits called the "Five Leaves," and he's hoping that Masanosuke will join them. Masanosuke is reluctant to help them, but nonetheless finds himself embroiled in the world that Yachi and his eccentric companions live in…

Complete Series : 12 TV episodes

Extras : Textless Opening and Ending - Beez Trailers

Crafted by animation studio Manglobe (Samurai Champloo, Ergo Proxy), House of Five leaves is definitely not a flashy nor a trendy take on the samurai genre.

But for true-to-life Japanese culture enthusiasts this is like fine tea, best appreciated under the pale moon of a rainy night.

Excellent 12 Nov 2011
While this is not one of the all-time anime greats, it's well worth your time and money. It's set in Tokugawa Japan, and is a good bit more realistic about that era than most such anime; the lead for example is a samurai, but he is dirt poor (as many were) to the degree that at one point he takes work as a labourer. He's also not got what you might call a standard samurai personality. There are quite a few geisha-type characters, and although they cope with their lives pretty well, there are no bones made about the basic unhappiness and exploitative nature of their position.

The story is quite intricate, but ultimately makes sense and works well psychologically too. The characters are believable and well written (and easy to like.)

The art style is pretty unusual, but I found it grew on me, and at times is quite beautiful.

This would probably appeal to you if you liked the (excellent) Rurouni Kenshin OVAs (though it's not as gloomy.)
