A friend got me to watch this movie and I started with some reluctance to watch it thinking "oh god not another period drama".

The film follows a family through the years and soon has you bonding with the characters so much so that without giving away the rollercoaster plots you will laugh and cry. I actually did find myself in tears come the end of the movie as it is a very spritual, tearjerker of a film with some knockout performances from Irons, Streep, Close and Ryder.

Actually I would go as far as saying that Close and Ryder both surprised me as their roles really do allow them to shine as fine actors. As for the relationship between Irons and Streep well the word "authentic" comes to mind as they make a great on-screen couple and although Irons plays a devilish, cold-hearted man his love for Streep's character come the end will bring you to tears. Hats off also to the wardrobe and make-up department which ensure the characters believably age before your eyes.

THIS IS A MOVIE WITH A MESSAGE. IT HAS HEART AND SOUL. FOR ME IT IS ONE OF THE BEST FILMS I HAVE SEEN OF LATE AND A TRUE GEM THAT SEEMINGLY WAS OVERLOOKED BY THE MOVIE WORLD SOME 10 YEARS AGO WHEN IT WAS MADE.

I bought this because I was reading the book (again). I adore this book. The film is dreadful. I guess on reflection no film could really do it justice but, come on, Streep as a 15 year old?????? Jeremy Irons as a Latino caballero????????????? Really so poor as to be laughable. Do not buy if you love the book. Only Banderas worth the few quid I paid for this. :0)

I was truly overjoyed upon getting a copy of this movie on dvd which I saw on the wide screen many years ago. This is actually a rare movie because in the US, it is not available in the mainstream Amazon and a certain seller is selling his copy at an exorbitant price! Which is why I decided to check it out on Amazon UK. Lo and behold! They had a copy. While this movie borders on greatness, it was really the ultimate disappointment for me to find out that this dvd had NO SUBTITLES - in English or any other language. Isn't the subtitle feature BASIC in any DVD? At least the English one should be present. But there was NONE which is why I rate this only 3-stars. When I watch my favorite movies, I put on the subtitles for better appreciation but with this particular movie, I was so downhearted that there were no subtitles!

one of my favorite films ever. Great cast, moving story, lots of passion and fair share of mystery. Perfect stay-in treat.

this film was absolutely amazing. Isabel allende is one of my favourite authors. but you always know you are going to see a good film when the cast is so amazing.

I really enjoyed the book. With a film, I felt it was very fast-moving. Thnking about it, the book could probably be made into a series - it could then concentrate more on Clara's... Read more
