Product Description

Synopsis

Bermondsey Priory, 1114. A young chaplain succumbs to the temptations of the flesh - and suffers a gruesome punishment. From that moment, the monastery is cursed, and over the next 500 years, murder and treachery abound within its hallowed walls. A beautiful young bride found dead two days before her wedding. A ghostly figure that warns of impending doom. A daring plot to depose King Edward II. Mad monks and errant priests ...even the poet Chaucer finds himself drawn into the dark deeds and violent death which pervade this unhappy place.

Fantastic read, best yet!!!! Story flows and links up very well, much improved on sword of shame. Very clever to keep you guessing until the end what has happened in the prologue, can't say more as will give the game away! Take trade paperback on hols with you if you haven't already been.

A Gripping Read 5 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
I have read another of the Medieval Murderers' books before, so I knew what to expect: a series of historical murder mystery novellas set across several centuries with a common theme. I enjoyed the other book, so I was eager to read another. The common theme in this book is Bermondsey Priory, where the prologue starts the story. Each of the subsequent novellas is set in the priory, or on the grounds of it following the dissolution of the monasteries. As other reviewers have mentioned, the epilogue concludes the story started in the prologue, and in so doing pulls together many of the clues that were given throughout the novellas.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I couldn't put it down. I found each of the stories enjoyable in its own right, and I thought that they were woven together very well. I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys this genre; and to anybody who would like to get into this genre, as the main characters of four out of the five novellas in this book also have series of their own.

This was my first go at the Medieval Murders books, having previously enjoyed the Crowner John mysteries, and I am very impressed! I thought the short stories kept it very lively and interesting, and exploring the 'House of Shadows' through different times and characters was inspired.
After I read the last page I turned back to the front to read the prologue again, I'm sure many readers did the same.
I am also pleased that I have a few more authors to look into now that I have tried them out in this format.
