Book Description

31 Mar 2010

An atmospheric mystery from Wales' best-loved author -" "The Second World War is over. Artist Riana Evans falls in love with a dilapidated mansion in Wales, despite its rumoured ghosts, and is delighted when its elderly, eccentric owner sells it to her for a pittance. The 'ghosts' prove good for business - inspiring her paintings in an almost supernatural way and providing welcome atmosphere at a series of profitable ghost-spotting weekends. But it soon becomes clear that there's someone - or something - who'll do anything to make sure Riana never discovers the secrets the house hides . . .

1.0 out of 5 stars Immature and one-dimensional 31 July 2010
By Keen Reader TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
I read this book from the local library, but was so astonished by it I looked on amazon to see what other people thought. Unfortunately nobody else has reviewed it yet!

I feel compelled, unusually for me, to write this, because this book held such promise and failed on every level.

The premise for the story was great! Haunted house, mysterious deaths, post-war Welsh setting - looking good so far!

But it reads like a 10 year old's "What I did on the School Holidays" essay and is so full of unlikely scenarios, cliched characters and hackneyed prose that I only finished reading it because I couldn't believe it could all be so bad! But it was. Even the whodunnit unveiling turns out a complete letdown.

A very sorry disappointment from an apparently well-established writer, given the number of other books she appears to have had published. I might try some of her other books from the library to see what they're like.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book and story. 13 Jan 2011
By Daisy
Format:Hardcover
I had this book for Xmas, and was rather excited about reading it - as the story is based around the wonderful old mansion house of Aberglasney in Carmarthenshire, of which I am extremely familiar.
It began well, and it was a bit like reading about an old friend!
The story was quite exciting, and I think I related to the book more than some of the other people that have reviewed it, as it is about an artist buying, and moving to Aberglasney - and I am an artist who has spent many weeks having exhibitions there! So, I could be biased.
Having said that, I did really enjoy the book, it was easy to read - entertaining, even though some of the parts were a little predictable, I didnt want to put it down, so I would highly recommend it.

The only down side really, is that for the price, it was a really short book. I'm not a fast reader, but I finished it within a few days. More like a 'short story' than a 'book' - most of the chapters are 2 pages long, then a blank page to the next chapter! So its actually even shorter than it looks!
Don't let that put you off though, especially if you are familiar in any way with Abeglasney, its a great little book.

2.0 out of 5 stars A badly written play?!! 2 Dec 2010
By Jan B.
Format:Hardcover
I looked at the other reviews of this book to see if it was just me who had a problem with it! One reader described it as a 10 year old's essay and I must admit it read to me like a badly written play!
I wont give up on a book I have started so I persevered but couldn't wait to get to the end and start something else.
It wont encourage me to read any more books by this author.
