I'm a 35 year-old and therefore not exactly in the intended age range for this series of books. I got this first short book as a Kindle freebie and I did enjoy it: an unusual house with many secrets and a family that get drawn right into it's web. The writing is good and I read it very quickly, desperate to find out what would happen. However, this is very much a series of books and this first book is just a taster that ends just as things really start. I enjoyed reading it, but I'm not likely to spend the money on the next 5 books in the series. For a child reader and young adult reader (I'd estimate this as a good book for 11 years+ but I don't have kids that age so I could be way off) this could be an excellent set of books to read and enjoy.
I am half way through this book and just cannot put it down! It's totally gripping and I am totally wrapped up in the plot. It's spooky and exciting and I love the font it appears in on my kindle. Lovely to look at and it so suits the story. It's gothicy and spooky looking and really nice to look at. I am struggling to put it down at bedtime. The characters (the two boys) are so 'real' and I am with them every step as they explore strange corridors and enter through doors into who knows what. I've read some great books recently but this one is really 'tops'!
This book has a good plot but it is start of a serial rather than a stand alone or series book in that it ends abruptly in the to be continued mode. It is well written with atmospheric descriptions of the locations which seem realistic. I however did not get the same feeling for the characters which did not seem to have much depth. There are reading group notes so I assume this is for an adult audience but it does seem more a children's book. I was put off by the typeface (I am not sure what the typeface was but the uppercase D has the bottom missing) and the line double spacing. A problem with this Kindle version is that you miss the plan of the house if you open it and start reading as you need to turn back a few pages to find it. The book starts with a prologue from 30 years before where a woman is abducted; this makes little sense until you get to the end of the book where this is explained together with the reason for the families move to the house as the reasons given at the beginning of the book are not very enlightening. The book start slowly, but stick with it and it does speed up and become an engrossing story, suspend belief as the logic behind the story does not hold up and there is much left to the imagination however it is an enjoyable tale for most ages and I will probably read the next in the serial.
