Book Description

18 April 2008
Dante Rossetti was born in 1828. He was an English translator, poet, painter and illustrator. Rossetti's poetry reflected the tragedies in his life beginning with the suicide of his wife after the death of their baby. He buried his poems with her but later had them exhumed and published. In later years he became addicted to drugs and fought with depression. The House of Life is a series of poems tracing the development of intimate relationships. Rossetti saw his poems as a series of mosaic moments which together formed a "monument" to the experience.

3.0 out of 5 stars I AM NOT AS THESE 16 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
'I am not as these, the poet saith' .So true and so appropriate to this delightful book of sonnet sequence. Some ninety five poems in Rossetti's famous anthology entitled 'The House of Life' dominated by the theme of love , as indeed is life itself is for most of us.Perhaps biographical, of his love for his wife Elizabeth Siddal who died young.I especially liked 'Not as These' from which I draw my title for this review, for indeed we are not and therefore poetry is an natural outlet for such emotion. The poems are arranged in four sections- Youth & Change;True Woman;Change & Fate and Old & New Art.A sonnet is indeed 'a moment's monument' here in such capable hands.Sadly there is no contents or navigation so the search feature becomes essential in this kindle ebook and as with all poetry on kindle the landscape option is a 'must have'.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction... 20 May 2010
Format:Paperback
I bought this after enjoying (ahem) Aidan Turner reading a selection of Rossetti's sonnets on the Desperate Romantics site...

It's far from perfect (my copy had a few typos) but neither was it exorbitantly priced, and I was more than content with my purchase.
