Format:Hardcover
A picture book called `My house' could easily be full of classic imagery and boring traditional furniture, and feel like a place where children should behave sensibly in shiny shoes. Fortunately this is NOT a book like that. In fact it's anything but! Imagine opening the front door of an everyday house and being blasted by a magical world of surrealism and fun, with zany characters and unusual moments squeezed into every corner. This `My House' isn't fancy on the outside but inside it's a world of interesting bits and bobs and thingumijobs, a place where children can see anything, imagine anything. The pictures are entirely wacky in an autumnal colour palette which is strikingly different from `standard quirky' books and comics, and entices the reader in to a hidden world behind a closed door. It's hard to describe this mix-up of thoughts and happenings that seem all at once both everyday and yet complete eccentric. Each double page spread has a myriad of activities that might take place in a wacky house, from an odd little creature in a boat, to a colourful monster chatting to a superhero, a selection of weird animals, some talking beans and a frankfurter with hat, inventions and comic strip mixed up with the commonplace, and the occasional nugget of pure physics.
Both boys and girls (and their grown-ups) are captivated by this book and return to it over and over, each time smiling at something new they've only just spotted.
It's A House Less Ordinary. And my children and I would like to move there. Brilliant!

A Tour Through a Mind 3 July 2010
Format:Hardcover
Delphine Durand's artful, beautiful little graphic novel is a gorgeous alternative view of someone's mind. Translated by Sarah Ardizzone, the 'House; is populated by 'flumps': thoughts, parts of oneself, little bits of your mind that pop up during the day. There is big, happy yellowflump, who always looks rather chilled. There is BaadHairDay, whose hair is an explosive mass of suiggles, and Mr Nozitall, who quietly spouts knowledge. Through the book hops Mustafa, always missing one shoe, bizarre animals, round sheep-like creatures called flops.

It's a scattered, messy, beautiful array of creatures. An entirely strange little tour, it has the unpredictable format that means children will love to pore over it, spotting new bits, exploring each page: as, I imagine, will most adults. A copy of this book lives by my desk, reminding me why I study books. I imagine it would be brilliant in a school: decoding it, and inventing their own way of describing their mind, would probably be particularly effective with a learning mentor or a child who struggled to express what was going on inside. Although it's a beautiful, happy, lovely book, there are dark moments. One character wanders through looking angry and sad, with a bucket on his head. When he says 'I'm ugly and nobody loves me!' another flump says 'That's because your hat is ridiculous'. The ugly flump takes off his hat, to reveal a giant, bucket-shaped head. There is even a page at the end designed to be doodled with the reader's own imagined outcomes for each character, even little bucket-man.

Not all the French in this book has been translated. Where it every now and then a panel is in French, but never one that would interrupt the enjoyment of the book. There is no story as such, just an exciting, funny, ridiculous array of characters. This is a really enjoyable book to browse, and I can imagine it being a fantastic rainy-day book for children to explore.

Sweet & Quirky 28 Nov 2007
By Deborah Freedman - Published on Amazon.com

My Map Book

"My house isn't fancy on the outside. Really nothing special at all - come in - "

This is not a book to read exactly (well, at least not to a crowd), it's a book to pour over and over, preferably with someone who shares your sense of humor. The pages of MY HOUSE are jumbles of rooms full of interesting, endearing, strange characters - "people", if you can call them that (Mr. Nozitall, Mrs. Fishyscales, Badhairday, Mega-Ugly and Maxi-Foul, et al), animals (large, small, invented), flops, flumps - who appear throughout this plotless book. It's sweetly bizarre and incredibly funny in a quirky sort of way, for readers who like author/illustrators such as Maira Kalman, Sarah Fanelli (hmmm... who am I missing?). Every inch of every page is full of tiny, amusing details, painted in rich colors with occasional collaged bits. For ALL ages.

Delphine Durand, an under-appreciated artistic genius (in my book), has generously given us a glimpse inside her fertile imagination, and it's a real funhouse. The pages are packed with wacky, imaginative characters, absurd collages and silly wordplay. But it's all within a theme and when you read it carefully, there are tiny subplots woven throughout. I'm a children's book author/illustrator, and this is one of my go-to books when I need some inspiration. A great book to help lighten your mood, provide a giggle and help you take life less seriously.
