You may have just mortgaged your life!

Shock gore master Lucio Fulci s The House by the Cemetery is one of the finest typically single-minded exercises in zombie terror. You d think they d twig given the basement door is nailed shut that they should get the hell out. Instead they stay long enough to discover their zombified non rent-paying lodger, the cellar-dwelling, flesh-hungry Dr Freudstein and boy is he pis**d!

5.0 out of 5 stars classic horror film! 2 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Frightening, bizzare, gory and trippy horror film. The films plot is a mixture of many famous horror films, including the shining, frankenstien, dont look now and the amytiville horror. However this film is somehow more than the sum of its parts and is genuinly nightmarish and frightening. On seeing this film as a kid who had seen a lot of horror films, this was the one that made the most impression on me and my friends, and was talked about in school for years afterwards,(even my father was impressed by it!) I wont give away too much plot but the film is based around a scary house on the edge of a cemetery, the family that moves there ,a ghoulish monster and a terrible secret. Strange close up camera shots (in typical fulci style)permeate the movie, and terrible dubbing, but great creepy music, and very gruesome scenes. Not for the faint hearted! I highly recommend this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr Fruedstein... in all his uncut gory glory! 19 Sep 2009
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
House by the Cemetery arrives in the UK uncut, its about time! The film concerns a house that a young couple and their kid move into not knowing what danger they are in, someone is killing people and no-one in the house is safe, the sinister Dr Freudstein is supposedly behind it all but as the husband looks deeper into the mystery things take an unusual twist, if you're a Fulci fan this disc is a must have, if you don't like Italian horror or dubbed movies give it a miss. The film has a great transfer and some interesting special features making it a good version to get. All in all a great modern gothic horror with some decent gore, its a great addition to the cult horror fans collection, if you liked this you should look into some of Fulci's similar films such as The Beyond [DVD] [1981] [US Import] or City of the Living Dead [DVD] [1980] or Zombie 2 [DVD] [1979] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] which are all brilliant in my opinion.

Fulci Lives!

4.0 out of 5 stars A blood soaked and hugely enjoyable horror ! 1 Dec 2004
Format:DVD
My personal favourite Fulci film.
As with all Fulci films, the atmosphere is as immediately noticeable as the style with which he directs. However, unlike most of them, this film manages to keep up the sense of growing unease that builds all the way to the climax. The tension remains almost unharmed by the appalling acting and the over the top gore effects.
Although this version still suffers at the hands of the BBFC (most notably the estate agent's demise, which is considerably less grisly here than in the uncut version) there are still some nasty scenes, and the use of a small child as one of the main characters adds to the oppressive tension.

4.0 out of 5 stars Under-rated Classic 9 Jun 2003
Format:DVD
I'll never forget the first time i rented this, around 13 years ago. What it lacks in clear and logical narrative, (something i probably have in common with the film) it certainly makes up in atmosphere, and good old fashioned zombie violence. Throat slashings, multiple impalements with pokers, stabbings and general flesh ripping, are all included here (and even more in the R1 uncut vers). Then there's the lovely Katriona MacColl to gaze upon too. What more could a young man want? All hail The Doctor!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Blu Ray of a Fulci classic 11 Nov 2011
By aXXon N
Format:Blu-ray
I never thought I'd see the light of day when a film such as House by the Cemetery would get such a great release, with so many great extras.

The transfer is about as good as your gonna get, very natural, no DNR, no messing, just a pure Hi-Def transfer. Blue Underground really know how to make the most of their blu ray releases. It's also great that every single one of their blu rays, is REGION FREE.

Whats most astonishing of all, is that ALL the special features are presented in Hi-Def.

And boy, do we get plenty.

"Meet the Boyles" - Interviews with Stars Catriona MacColl and Paolo Malco
"Children of the Night" - Interviews with Stars Giovanni Frezza and Silvia Collatina
"Tales of Laura Gittleson" - Interview with Star Dagmar Lassander
"My Time With Terror" - Interview with Star Carlo De Mejo
"A Haunted House Story" - Interviews with Co-Writers Dardano Sacchetti and Elisa Briganti
"To Build a Better Death Trap" - Interviews with Cinematographer Sergio Salvati, Special Make-Up Effects Artist Maurizio Trani, Special Effects Artist Gino De Rossi, and Actor Giovanni De Nava
Deleted Scene
Theatrical Trailers
TV Spot
Poster & Still Gallery.

Audio is also in both Italian mono with subtitles, and English 2.0 DTS. No compressed 5.1 DTS here, it is what it is.

I mean seriously, if your a fan of this film, what more do you want? This is pretty much definitive. It's extremely doubtful that a better version will come along, at least in terms of a physical format. It's one of those releases where, upon purchase, you can either sell your old dvd version or give it away to a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hi-def freudstein! 24 Oct 2011
Format:Blu-ray
A young couple (catriona macoll and Paolo malco) Move from new york to an old colonial house in rural new england to continue the studies of the previous professor, who we see at the beginning of the movie getting murdered along with his girlfriend by a mysterious assailant. The official story is the professor went mad and murdered his girlfriend before killing himself, except the family soon begin to suspect there is something more to the story due to several mysterious dissapearences and the insistance of their weird-voiced son bob who'se having visions of a red-headded little girl warning him not to go to the house. Add to this the strange noises from the mysteriously locked cellar and it becomes abundantly clear something is very wrong with the house....

House by the cemetary was made during a peak in director lucio fulci's career, fuelled by the artistic and commercial successes of his cycle of horror movies including Zombie 2 (zombie flesh-eaters to us brits) City of the living dead and the beyond. Some fans suggest it was a creative peak as well (this is probably one of the last true classics fulci made) though thats more than a little unfair considering he's also responsible for a series of excellent giallos including Dont torture a duckling (Don't Torture A Duckling - Fan Edition [DVD]) perversion story, murder to the tune of seven black notes (aka the psychic) and lizard in a womans skin. Fulci had always been a talented film-maker so its no surprise he made some truley excellent horror movies.

House is sometimes critisised as being too slow paced, and to be fair it is indeed slower than some of his other movies, but deliberately so.
