Reviews

Season 1:

Ruthless and cunning, Congressman Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and his wife Claire (Robin Wright) stop at nothing to conquer everything. This wicked political drama penetrates the shadowy world of greed, sex and corruption in modern D.C. Kate Mara and Corey Stoll co-star in the first original series from David Fincher and Beau Willimon.

Season 2:

Masterful, beguiling and charismatic, Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and his equally ambitious wife Claire (Robin Wright) continue their ruthless rise to power in Season 2 of "House of Cards". Behind the curtain of power, sex, ambition, love, greed and corruption in modern Washington D.C. the Underwoods must battle threats past and present to avoid losing everything. As new alliances form and old ones succumb to deception and betrayal, they will stop at nothing to ensure their ascendancy.

Once upon a time long ago British TV produced the best drama series but now the crown has passed to the US and in particular HBO. This is a prime example of American TV at its best but do not fall into the trap of comparing it with the truly outstanding original British version. Although there are brief insider nods to that series in the US version the two have little in common. The acting and casting are uniformly superb and Spacey's Richard 111 like asides are witty and beautifully OTT.

Both my wife and I found it like a hard to put down book and were tempted to run more than one episode at a time. The same is true of my daughter and her husband so it would seem to appeal to at least two generations.

My only and serious complaint is the packaging. The discs are so tightly packed into their individual slots that there is a very real danger of damaging them and I strongly advise that after viewing they be put in any spare DVD boxes you may have. In view of this extremely serious fault I have removed one star although the series itself deserves the full five.

Finally, subject to my reservation above, this exclusive Amazon offer is great value for money.

I have watched both season 1 & 2 and they are both outstanding. The premise follows the Brilliant British version but has been transferred to American politics. The similarities are obvious, well to me anyway. The acting is superb at every level and Kevin Spacey is an absolutely outstanding actor. Every bit as charismatic in the American version as Ian Richardson was in the British version. Spacey is the finest actor of his generation bar none!
Spacey plays Francis Underwood, the scheming and dangerous US senator, who is supported by his equally scheming and devious wife played by the excellent Robin Wright. Both plot their way to ultimate power and care not one hoot for anyone who gets in their way. You have to watch this yourself and compare it with the British version. Both, in their own way, are outstanding television. This version is very highly recommended and has so many twists, turns and cliff-hangers that it will keep you enthralled from start to finish and then leave you wanting more. Roll on season 3!!

What a winner....human nature unleashed in all its gross ambition. Unlike real life, the occasional evil party , gets it in the neck , in spades. Immensely satisfying acting, Spacey delighting in his role, with wicked asides to the viewer, Wright as razor blade as her hubby..........the whole production as deft and intelligent in terms of storeyline , as ive seen anywhere.
Extremely enjoyable , with human predation as the main theme, for the central characters. The hunter is also the hunted, and only the most persistant and ruthless will win.
The reference to real life,s cynical , calculating , manipulative, and wheeler-dealer political powerbases is very clearly based on past and present practices, that we are all subjected to in the real world of the secretive politician, and his or her greasy pole climb. No secrecy in the H of Cards, we are party to it all . Superb .

I LOVE THIS SERIES. I saw the original House of Cards and enjoyed that very much. This, the American version, is different but just as good. In the British version, there was a central character and his wife was in the background. In this modern American version, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, are the husband and wife team who dominate the drama. I was hooked from the first episode and was very unhappy to watch the last episode of series two. I am very much looking forward to season three. I was never one for West Wing. I prefer the cloak and dagger approach to politics.

This isn't so much a review of the show, which is pretty good, as far as I can judge from one episode ... becuase that's as far as I got before my damaged disc crapped out. Why was it damaged? Because of the genius packaging. That's right, the very thing that's supposed to contain and protect the discs, has directly sabotaged them. Why the hell do designers persist in placing their egos ahead of functionality? This is the worst case of style over substance I've ever seen. Indeed, it's a handsome looking display, stylish like Spacey's suits, solid, and weighty in the hand. But then, try and pull a disc out of those extremely tight cardboard (yes, cardboard) sleeves. It won't budge. so you'll have to grip it both sides with your fingers, and yank ... and it still won't emerge. Why? Because it has got wedged between the flaps of cardboard, and worse, it's got all gummed up with the glue that's supposed to be sticking the wretched cardboard together! So when you do finally succeed in wrenching a disc free, it'll be so smeared with glue, it'll fail, and maybe even damage your player. In 20 years buying thousands of DVDs, I've never seen the like. I note from other comments here this is not an isolated case. This edition is a disaster and a disgrace. Avoid! I sent it back for a refund and started again with a dull but serviceable plastic box edition.

The series grows on you. At the start you keep thinking "not as good as the British original", but Spacey's laconic delivery gains confidence and his cynicism is the equivalent of Ian Richardson's. The support characters are well conceived but the success of the series depends largely on a taut plot which chronicles Spacey's relentless drive to the top and sees him resort to ever more criminal activity to cover his tracks. At times it is difficult not to watch a whole run of episodes, but that would be a waste. This is so much better than normal tv fare that it is better to ration it. Highly recommended.
