3.0 out of 5 stars Promising, 4 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Although the novel about India is one of my favourite genres, I found this book a little too slow. It's well researched and lovingly written, but could have benefitted more by covering slightly less, but in more depth. For instance, the characters are too lightly sketched and appear and disappear as the book races through the decades. This can be frustrating as it doesn't allow the reader to get really engage with them and find out who they are and why they act as they do. The early relationship between Daniel (the main character) and his younger brother Aaron is an example of this. I wanted to know more about how they got on as children and why they reached the stage they did, but that wasn't covered beyond a couple of short explanations.

I'll still watch out for the next book by Davidar though!

5.0 out of 5 stars I want a blue mango tree!, 9 Oct 2003
By JB (Eastbourne, E. Sussex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
A really emotive book with great descriptions of... mangoes! it is amazing to read about the differnent eras described in this book ranging from Rajustan to Jaipur in a beautiful familly saga.
It has all the greats with tradegy, hard ship, India and is at the turn of the last century onwards so a bit of politics too!
I would really recommend this book to anyone who liked "the Glass Palace".

1.0 out of 5 stars SLOW, 24 Jul 2006
I found this book although had lovely descriptions did not move fast enough to hold my attention. It isn't as if I suffer from ADD but I found it difficult to concentrate on and wished something more would happen!
It was slightly frustrating and I felt I couldn't connect to the characters. Disappointing.
