I had read "House of Doors", a book set in the same house but in a different time period, and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I picked up "House of Bells" expecting a similar kind of mystery/ghost story. Like "House of Doors", this book is set at the old, definitely haunted, English mansion named Desperance. In this story, though, the main character is a professional party girl, Grace, whose only purpose is to look pretty and be seen in the tabloids next to a rich and famous man. She's recently been released from prison, after a very public scandal, and is putting on a brave face while trying to pick up the pieces of her life. She's offered a chance to escape for a time by going on an undercover assignment for a newspaper editor, who happens to be her ex-lover. The assignment involves seeking a lost reporter, who disappeared while looking into a group of hippies at an isolated mansion in the English countryside. When she gets there, she discovers trouble and danger, and a terrible question: is the house haunted, or is she haunting the house? Highly recommended.
