Product Description

Sid (Steven Mackintosh), Gwenny (Lisa Palfrey) and Boyo (Matthew Rhys) have cared for their eccentric mother (Siân Phillips) since their father disappeared several years ago. Money is already a problem, and things become critical when Sid and Boyo miss out on jobs as miners. Sid and Gwenny then embark on a drug and alcohol-induced fantasy in which they imagine themselves to be beat-generation heroes Jack Kerouac and Joyce Johnson. Meanwhile, Boyo becomes increasingly alienated, and is shocked when his mother makes a startling revelation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply a fantastic film 21 Feb 2003
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
'House of America' is the film version of a fantastic play by playwright Ed Thomas. It displays the slow deconstuction of an intimate Welsh Valleys family. The mother of the family, being a welsh mother and known as "mam", slowly falls apart due to her secret buried in the mine next to the house they have lived in for years. Sian Phillips potrays this woman, a wreck due to the modernisation of the land she has always known, brillianty, it is seriously one of the best performances she has ever given out. Matthew Rhys shines as the son who faces his patriarchial duties to hold his family together. BUY THIS! it is a fabulous and voyeristic view of the result of modern societies influence! It's fantastic - also read the play by Ed Thomas!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 28 Feb 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I was gutted that this film was so dislikeable. The actors and plot held so much promise, I couldn't wait to see it. I just don't 'get' it. I'm very open minded with films, a lover of all things Welsh and a fan of the cast of this title. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend this film to anybody I know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good film 25 Feb 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Very good film however it has a very dark, deep and twisted storyline and narrative. The only thing I didn't like about the film was the incest. Very disturbing

3.0 out of 5 stars House of America review 25 July 2011
By Yve
I purchased the movie beacuse of Matthew Rhys. His performance did not dissapoint. The acting was amazing. I not rate it high, simply because the story was dark, tragic and heartbreaking. There was nothing positive about the story and I likely won't watch it again. Purely for the acting performances however, it's ok.
