Book Description

4 Aug 2008
A Seductive Nighttime World. . .

Dr. Emily Drake's psychotherapy patients tend to be a little unusual. Instead of midlife crises and mother fixations, Emily treats vampires with blood phobias and sex-demons looking for meaningful relationships. But healing these powerful beings requires an important rule: Never trust a shifter. Especially not one like Detective Colin Gyth, whose gold-flecked eyes and predatory air make Emily realize how much she longs to lose control. . .

A Dark And Dangerous Hunger. . .

Colin can't believe the doctor he has to work with on the Night Butcher murder case is the one person who could expose his true identity as a wolf shifter. Smart and sexy, Emily brings out the alpha male in Colin, unleashing a wild desire that takes them both over the edge. . . But in the shadows, the Night Butcher waits, eager to spill Emily's blood and taste her terror. And he'll use any means to destroy her, including the one person she has grown to trust. . .

"Highly sensual and definitely dangerous." --Shannon McKenna

"A cross between CSI and Medium, only hotter and with a hero that truly has bite!" --Jacquelyn Frank

3.0 out of 5 stars From teen to grown ups! 25 Feb 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm used to the whole twilight/immortals teen romances and tried to step up the ladder of the PG. The story is well developed, the plot is engaging and the leaders are really good. Dr Drake is a very brave woman and Gyth is a macho man but easy to love. Agree with the statement CSI/Medium since the crime is the main subject in the book; however I have to disagree from my friend in the first review since I really liked the sex scenes!!! ( lol) . I'm still trying to find a connection between the name and the story. It is my preferred series? No. It is a good change to have a break from the teenager reading? Yes. Am I reading the sequels? Yes, in time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hotter After Midnight 4 Feb 2008
Emily Drake is a psychologist with a very special talent--thanks to her empathic power, she can touch the thoughts and emotions of her patients. And Emily's patients, well, they aren't exactly typical either; they're Other--vampires, demons, all of the creatures that humans fear in the darkness of the night.

When one of the Other starts killing humans, Emily is pulled into the investigation. Colin Gyth, the lead detective on the case, doesn't trust her, and, since Emily senses he's a Shifter, a being born with the ability to transform into an animal, the feeling is pretty mutual. Never trust anything born with two faces ... that was Emily's motto. However, she and Colin are forced to put aside their misgivings and work together once Emily officially joins the investigation as a profiler.

While Emily and Colin search to unmask the killer, an unexpected passion grows between them. Burned in the past by those he'd trusted, Colin had never thought he'd let a woman get to close to him again, especially a woman with a dangerous power like Emily's. Yet he finds that he can't resist her. There's something about the reserved Doctor Drake that calls to him, and the beast within the man recognizes his mate. But when the killer sets his sights on Emily, Colin will have to risk his life in order to protect the woman he craves more than anything else, and Emily will have to use her gift to look into the very heart of evil in order to defeat the monster hiding in the shadows.

The leads from this tale, Colin and Emily, featured briefly in Midnight Sins, and that book was interesting enough, as were they, that I had to track down this book and read it. It was IMO even better than MS, but why oh why did the author name the guy Colin, conjuring up for me the 'office guy in the weird old bleached cardie' image?! A sad choice of name for a decent guy, a hot character and for this excellent tale.

Colin is a wolf-shifter cop, but he keeps his 'Other' side secret after his late partner discovered that he was Other and torched Colin's home and tried to kill him. This makes him slightly aloof from his new partner Todd and his fellow cops. Yet when suddenly cases of mutilated female bodies start to appear, Colin gets a lead that doctor Emily can help, and she becomes a consultant to the police.

Emily hasn't had an easy life, having been able to 'see/sense' Others since she was a little girl, a time when Others were less prevalent and were more secretive than now, so her 'gift' was seen as an illness, as an evil and she spent time in a psychi hospital. Now grown-up and having had a relationship with an Other, she's now a psychiatrist/psychologist to Others, and the book starts with her counselling a vampire who has bite and blood phobia, which makes for some funny moments.

Anyway, Emily immediately realises that Colin is Other, but not that he is a wolf-shifter, the most aggressive, posessive, Alpha and uncontrollable of all shifters, but she respects his privacy. When she then becomes threatened and hurt, his protective instincts come out and he realises that she is his mate, but when they have sex, he refuses to do what comes naturally and 'mark' her, as repeated 'markings' will result in a mating with her, with or without her consent.

3.0 out of 5 stars Midnight book 1 28 Jun 2014
By Kate Phillips TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Generally speaking I quite like Cynthia Eden books so I was expecting quite a lot from Hotter After Midnight. I did enjoy this book and finished it in a couple of afternoons but for me this wasn’t as good as some of the authors other work.

In terms of writing this was good. I have always liked Eden’s style and that didn’t change here. Like her other books this is an easy read to get into and I found the hours sliding away without really noticing.

The story itself was good and I liked the mix of the murder mystery and paranormal romance genres. What let this book down was the fact that it didn’t always make sense. There were a dew plot holes and some moments that didn’t seem necessary. For example the introduction of Emily’s mother and the implication (which comes from both the mother and other places) that Emily is evil served no real purpose. I thought it might be an attempt to implicate Emily as a suspect and make Colin second guess his feelings for her but in the end nothing came of it. Another example is mating which at the mid-way point seemed like a big deal but again it eventually came to nothing.

The characters were likeable but typical for this kind of book. Emily was a little too stubborn and Colin a little too alpha. Together they were good and there was no shortage of chemistry but it lacked any emotional impact.

This book wasn’t perfect and is not the best I have read from this author but I did enjoy it and I will read more from this series.
