I had been a fan of Desert Hearts' first album since it came out in 2001, and had almost given up on them when I heard that they had signed to Scottish inde Gargleblast Records in 2004. Finally the long-awaited follow up 'Hotsy Totsy Nagasaki' has been released in 2006 and what an album it is. The album opens with 'D Moon Pilot', an intricate question about the nature of art, but is soon obliterated by second track 'Sea Punk', a crushing riff and a dark pop sentiment that leaves you with physical marks after every listen. Then, resurrected we're on to the suicidal 'Gravitas' and then the Oldham-esque lament to love, 'Urchin', probably the best song of 2006. The album continues in this vein of intellect versus head-butt, sensitivity versus violence. This is my favourite record since 'Unknown Pleasures'. A modern guitar pop masterpiece.

This is a truly great record, and one of my favourites of last year. songs of love and drink and suicide and music that paint such a rich and lasting picture - I can't recommend this enough. Imagine palace brothers covering the undertones and an occaisional guest vocal from Kim Deal. Desert Hearts have managed to avoid all the cliches of modern rock 'n' roll, and have put together one of the finest and most original guitar-based pop albums of this century so far.
