Writen from the perspective of a twelve-year old girl trying to uncover the secret about the death of another girl which took place many years previously, and aided in this by some of the more eccentric inhabitants of the village, this novel reveals Grimes' insight into and understanding of human psycology better than any of her others. It is at the same time funny and tragic, and conveys the feelings of the narrator so perfectly that it sees more real than normal, everyday life. It stayed on my mind for a long time after I read it.
In my opinion, this is Grimes' best novel, and I definitely recommend it.
