Amazon.co.uk Review

At the tender age of 20, Michelle Branch finds herself reaching for the highest of heights with Hotel Paper--after all, her debut, The Spirit Room, sold 2.6 million copies and won a Grammy. Yet, considering she was forced to write most of these songs in hotel rooms while on tour with artists such as Sheryl Crow (hence the album's title), she's done a remarkably good job. Eschewing the gothic melancholy of Fiona Apple and the bleeding heart sentimentalism of Jewel, she instead aims mostly for a lush pop sound to back tales of her first forays into the world of "serious" relationships. With main producer John Shanks lending a glossy 1980s feel to proceedings (as do several others), as well as tasteful orche

CD Description

'Hotel Paper' is the follow-up to Michelle Branch's debut album 'The Spirit Room' which was released in 2002. Acoustic guitars are fused with piano-led vocals to give an adult contemporary pop sound, reminiscent of Melissa Etheridge and Alanis Morissette. Produced by John Shanks and Greg Wells, thealbum features contributions from Sheryl Crow, Dave Navarroand Scott Weiland.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars isnt enough, 13 Sep 2003
By Jonathan Rhodes (London, UK/Washington DC) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the second album from the fantastically talented Michelle Branch. Her debut, The Spirit Room was amazing, with songs like All You Wanted and Goodbye To You. With this, she sounds more mature. Her songs are more meaningful and based more on real experiences that those on spirit room. She wrote nearly all of the songs, the others she co-wrote with one person, she plays the guitar piano and sings well, better than she did on her first album. These are the tracks:

1. Intro - a kinda pontless clown-music type thing that was also on on the Are You Happy Now? Music Video.

2. Are You Happy Now? - A fantastic first single with a great chorus. More rock and angry than any of her others. Play it loud! 10/10

3. Find My Way Back - Another great song with a catchy chorus. quite poppy but great. 9/10

4. Empty Handed - Aother rockier song. Very powerful and my favourite in the album-just. This is also Michelles favourite on the album and she is accompanied by a string orchestra.

5. Tuesday Morning - Catchy, sad song with another grea chorus. 9/10

6. One Of These Days - Slow and my least favourite song on the album. She apparently wrote it in about 10 minutes. 7/10

7. Love Me Like That - A rock/countyish song with a catchy chorus and Sheryl Crow doing the backing vocals. 10/10

8 Desperately - A slower one but, once you get used to it, it gets better. 8/10

9. Breathe - This is going to be the second single and should be number 1! Then again so should of Are You Happy Now? but it didnt do well at all. The Fast Food song comes number 2 and it comes 31...what was that about! Anyway, a great, chill-out, happier, song and one of the best. Sounds great to listen to in the car. 10/10

10. Where Are You Now - Im not as keen on this one, but i got used to it. 8/10

11. Hotel Paper - Once i heard this one more times it became another favourite. It is really powerful, emotional and about michelle spilling her thoughts out - on hotel Paper. She wrote most of her songs on tour, in hotels, hence the albums title. 10/10

12. 'Til I Get Over You - The saddest song on the album with a slow chorus and french backing vocals (i think shes part french). 8.5/10

13. Everywhere. I got the American version of the album which didnt have these two bonus tracks on, but there still great. This was her first single ever with a good, catchy chorus. It was in American pie 2. 10/10

14. Game of Love (with Santana) - This song got her much recognition and has been heard in many countries around the world. 9/10

15. Its You - This isn't a bonus track. Its a short, sad song and a great way to finish the album...if only it werent followed by that wierd intro music. 8/10

Buy this album, it will be one you favourites. Michelle may not get the recognition she deserves over here, but she's a big star in the US and, once you listen to the album, you will know why.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Awsome!, 12 Dec 2003
After hearing Michelle's debut studio album in 2001 I didn't think that she would be able to top it, however, I was proved wrong because she has returned with an album that is even better.

The album begins (after the intro) with the first single "Are You Happy Now", which has a slightly harder sound than the rest of the album, however, it still sounds great and you will find yourself humming the tune to yourself before long. Other songs on the album include "Breathe", "Find your way back" and "One of these days", which are all very good, and show how Michelle has matured in her sound in this second album.

All in all I would recomend this album to anybody who enjoyed the first, as well as anyone who would like to listen to something a little different to many of the Pop acts that are out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST album in the entire world...EVER!!!, 22 Sep 2003
By A Customer
The honest truth is that is album is the best I have ever heard!!! Wouldn't say it is better than the first because for Michelle to have written an album like The Spirit Room when she was only 14 is amazing enough in its own right, but now Meech has come out with "Hotel Paper"! Which is absolutly magical! Every single track has it's own stunning uniqueiness, which only Meech can provide to a growning audience all around the globe. My personal favourites would have to be "Tuesday Morning", as it has a certain sense of a lost feeling about it. "One of these days" is more or less like the "Goodbye to You" of this album. Ending off this fantastic album is "its you", the perfect little love song, which needs no prise or jutisfaction as the song basically speaks for itself! On the whole "Hotel Paper" is the perfect album for people of all types of interest as every track touches a part of us which we may not admit, but can all relate to. Michelle is a wonderful writter and is definitally here to stay. Make sure you have this album in your CD collection!!! The must have album of the century!
