Review
Good Hotel Guide Reviews (March 2008) What the media say. 1. For three decades the Good Hotel Guide has been one of the most authoritative sources of good places to stay in the UK and Ireland, Daily Mail, June 1st 2008 2. Britain s leading independent hotel guidebook The Times, May 8th, 2008 3. The Good Hotel Guide is a good source of high-quality family-friendly hotels , Daily Telegraph March 2008 4. Most of the commercial hotel guidebooks (even those published by the AA and RAC) actually charge hotels for entries and (Johansen's guides charge hotels up to £2,500 for entries) - they are never objective and we wouldn't trust them as far as we could throw them. The only guidebook we can wholeheartedly recommend is 'The Good Hotel Guide. The London Guide, February 2008 5. The Good Hotel Guide focuses entirely on the smaller, independent, family-run properties in Britain and Ireland and in doing so bangs the drum for a style of hotel-keeping that ultimately has far more value than the latest design concept . Sunday Times, October, 2007 6. The one guide that offers a sense of what a place is really like Mail on Sunday Sept 2007. 7. Where other hotel inspectors count trouser presses, the GHG rates a place on the things that really matter, such as character, hospitality and good food. That s why we take the César seriously, so seriously, in fact, that for the seventh year running, we ve gone undercover for a sneak preview of this year s winners. The Sunday Times Oct 2006 8. No money changes hands for inclusion in The Good Hotel Guide. No proprietor has been allowed to pay for inclusion, no free gifts or hospitality have been accepted by editorial staff, nor is there any paid-for advertising. Thus does the Guide maintain the reputation for complete objectivity that distinguishes it from its rivals and for 29 years has made it the one, true bible for travelers seeking a good meal and a good rest. Evergreen Magazine, Spring, 2006. 9. With the demise last year of The Which? Guide to Good Hotels, The Good Hotel Guide has become the clear leader in recommending hotels of quality and character while not accepting payment for inclusion or free hospitality. The Daily Telegraph Feb 2006. 10. "The GHG has high ethical standards--it pays its way and, unlike other guides, does not charge hotels to be included." The Mail on Sunday (Oct 2005). 11. . One of Britain's best regarded independent hotel guides . The Times Oct 2005. 12. That influential and Honest John Guide to Britain s hotels....the only mainstream guide that does not take payment for entries . Bath Evening Chronicle November 2005. 13. The new edition has lost none of its bite, nor its idiosyncratic direction of its criticisms . Bath Evening Chronicle. November 2005. 14. One of the most prestigious and authoritative hotel guides in the UK . Cambridgeshire Journal March 2005 15. It s about as honest and disinterested as a hotel guide can be....The UK s most prestigious awards for independently owned hotels. Sunday Times, Sept 5th, 2004 16. Perfect whether you want to fling yourself across crevasses or slump in a spa, Your Wedding March 2004. 17. A truly independent view of more than 800 places to stay, Oxford Times Jan 2004. 18. This is a must for frequent travellers or those who just want to let someone make the beds and cook the food occasionally....Every glove compartment should have one. Ink Magazine, Bath Dec 2003 19. Nearly 200 hotels are new to this year s guide which is seen as one of the most reliable available. Each entry is detailed and informative and prices itself on its honesty. France, Cheltenham Feb 2004 20. The reviews are as honest and thorough as it gets. Everything from idyllic B&Bs to our finest country houses. Wedding Day, Dec 2003 --Daily Mail etc

What hoteliers say 64. Many thanks for including us in your fantastic guide the only one I would ever use to choose somewhere to stay. Kathryn Richards, Alexandra Hotel, Lyme Regis. 65. We value our inclusion in your Guide as we find that those who arrive via the Good Hotel Guide have been unfailingly nice people , Annie Kindleysides of Meaburn Hill, April 2008 66. It has been an enormous privilege what more could I have asked than the kudos of an entry in the GHG, Christina Jackson of Glangrwyney Court. April 2008 67. The GHG brings us a huge amount of custom and we are grateful for your support. Baba Hine, Corse Lawn, April 2008 68. We always feel it is a huge privilege to be included in the Guide, and it makes life even more enjoyable for us by providing such lovely guests. Philip Gill, Shallowdale House, March 2008 69. We have greatly appreciated being included in the Good Hotel Guide it probably meant more to us than any rosettes or awards from publications as we felt that inclusion was a genuine response from guests who had stayed with us. Owners of Balgonie Country House Hotel, February 2008. 70. We particularly value the Good Hotel Guide as it is one of the few Guides which is truly independent. Their total impartiality enables them to say what they like about each establishment...Many people do not realize that most other Guides charge large amounts of cash for their inclusion. Ian Kirk of Auchendean Lodge Hotel, 19/10/06 71. We get a really interesting class of guests from the GHG. It clearly appeals to people who are sociable and enjoy exploring , Michael Bewick of Plas Tan-Yr-Alt. October 2007 72. We love the GHG always such nice people and a pleasure to have them, Jane Hepburn, Ladyburn June 2007 73. We do get a lot of bookings from the Guide and guest really appreciate the copy in the bedroom as well. Manja Gibson of Glenfinnan House House March 2007 74. Being selected by your Guide makes it all worthwhile and keeps me on my toes, Fiona Mitchell-Rose, 7 Danube Street, Edinburgh, Sept 2006. 75. Our entry is a truly excellent boost for us - bringing us , as it does, business which advertising couldn't buy. The spin off references to The Old Rectory in the Guardian travel section (two so far) have set the website alight with hits and have brought us lots of guests. Elizabeth and Paul Mitchell. The Old Rectory Torver, Sept 2006. 76. We are huge fans of your guide---it is great that inclusion can t be bought. It makes it such a reliable guide to use. Emma Stratton, Bedruthan Steps Hotel, Mawgan Porth, Cornwall, June 2006 77. The Good Hotel Guide is consistently the primary source of new business for the hotel and brings such lovely guests to our door. Nigel Crapper of Amerdale House, April 2006. 78. It is the inclusions that cannot be bought which are the really prestigious ones. Chris Dobbins, Beaufort Lodge, Norwich, July 1st, 2005 79. We were absolutely delighted to see the Good Hotel Guide bringing the debate about charging for inclusions in guidebooks to the notice of the media. It has been an ongoing grumble of ours for years that there is nothing to indicate to the public the difference between a merit guide and a pay for entry one. I remember sending a Johansen s Guide rep away with a flea in his ear a few years ago when he came to call, offering to say how splendid we were when he had neither stayed in the house nor eaten a meal. GHG hotelier April 2005 80. Your guide is excellent because its hotels and B&Bs are there purely on merit and not because they have forked out a fortune to join and have nice things written about them. Elaine Murdoch, owner of Lochwood Farm B&B. March 2005 --Hoteliers across the UK

What readers say 90 No one in their right mind would go near a hotel without your advice. David Taylor 91 We do realize the value of a book like the Good Hotel Guide after experiences like this....Kate & Jim Craddock. 92 As ever the GHG is priceless. Or, in words often heard here in the Deep South, now taken generically as referring to the book, its editors and its contributors: You da MAN! 93 "My husband can't understand why I spend so much time writing reports (for you), but your guide is still by far the best way to find a hotel and so I feel an obligation. And it's fun too!" Susan Hanley 94 We couldn't think of venturing onto the Continent without the GHG; I'd sooner forget my passport! Richard Barrett 95 I just wanted to say a big thanks for producing such a very honest guide to genuinely good hotels in the UK. My family have used the guide for many many years and we have found it to be spot on. We remain thankful that there is a genuinely independent guide out there. Tim Askew. Feb 2008 --Good Hotel Guide Buyers/Readers

5.0 out of 5 stars The Good Hotel Guide - great book!, 9 Mar 2009
By Ms. L. A. Canning (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The book is great! It really helped plan our road trip around Ireland. It gives real honest accounts of each hotel and notes things that other hotel guides do not. I loved the 25% discount vouchers as part of the book, this helped us stick to our budget. Totally recommended!
