This is a fantastic film. Imagine Peter Greenaway directing "Rosencrantz And Gildenstern Are Dead" and you are some way to imagining what this is like.
The idea of a play and a film within a film works very well, The Duchess of Malfi play interweaving seamlessly in the film.
The ensemble acting team improvised a lot of the story between them. This tends to result in films where the plot isn't the main point, which only works when there is a lot of discipline underpinning things. Which there is in this case. Rhys Ifans plays a gloriously objectionable film director, David Schwimmer superbly and subtly plays the put-upon producer. In lesser hands, Mike Figgis' handheld camerawork could grate on the nerves after a while. Here it works very well.
One of the previous reviewers described this as an inspiration to amateur film makers, which it is in a way, but like any craft you have to have a good command of the rules before you can even think about breaking them.
A good follow up to Timecode, and it's always good to see film directors who will break out and do their own things just for the love of making films.
The "making of" film is also very good, explaining the background to the film.

When a film crew (Saffron Burrows, David Schwimmer, Rhys Ifans and others) arrive in Rome who plan to film their own interpretation of the play "The Duchess Of Malfi", they in turn are being followed by a sleazy pre-madonna documentary hack (Salma Hayek) who is obsessed about the Dogme film movement. As crew members begin disappearing, all fingers point to the bell hops and maids of the hotel they are staying in, who may or may not be ritualistic cannibals.
If you consider yourself a film buff who can stomach almost anything, this may be the film for you but if you get your kicks from watching teeny-bopper comedies then you shouldn't even watch the trailer! In such a film like this, you would be forgiven not to pay attention to the actors performances. Rhys Ifans is hilarious as the would be director who is hell-bent on completing his movie, David Schwimmer plays against type and tries to shake loose of his "Ross from Friends" persona and Salma Hayek is a hoot as the attention seeking wannabe film maker.
Many people would see this as over-rated artsy rubbish but for the rest of us who are willing to forgive its faults (Its a tad over long and the stylish yet confusing camera angles and movements play tricks on the un-tamed eye) will find something to enjoy in this comedy/drama/satire/horror. Filmed on a shoe-string budget, this is every amateur film makers dream!

This film sure is a step into new territory. It's dark, weird, perverse, yet atmospheric and thought provoking. It seems so wrong as a movie but is entertaining and does "Move" you as a movie should, but it's also done in an artistic way in order to push the feelings of weirdness. I think it's the artistic way in which it's done that puts some people off. It's definately not a hollywood money making movie but a peice of artwork that should be there to contemplate and take what you want from.
