Amazon.co.uk Review

The goings on in the Hotel Babylon continue to provide glossy, shallow entertainment, as series four of the show finds that five-star hides an assortment of goings-on behind its closed doors.

There’s no pretence about Hotel Babylon to be anything but easy entertainment, and thus it’s quickly down to business this time round. There’s a new caretaker manager for starters, as Juliet Miller (played by Anna Wilson-Jones) takes the reins. Furthermore, the closure of the hotel is also on the horizon, with Japanese developers circling a possible deal.

But for the Hotel Babylon, it’s still business as usual. Business in the case of this particular hotel meaning celebrity magazine shoots, a Bollywood wedding and the threat of terrorism. And walking into the midst of all of this are a host of recognisable names. Among the stars who appear in series four are Christopher Cazenove, Honor Blackman, Kelly Osbourne, Denise Van Outen, Darius Danesh and Tony Robinson.

And that’s part of the fun. The over-the-top storylines, the larger-than-life personalities, and the ongoing behind-the-scenes shenanigans are precisely the ingredients that make the show such gleeful entertainment. For in years to come, Hotel Babylon will never be regarded as a classic piece of television, but it’s hard not to acknowledge that it’s very good fun nonetheless, series four most certainly included --Jon Foster

DVD Description

The hotel with no reservations

Starring Nigel Harman, Dexter Fletcher, Emma Pierson and Anna Wilson-Jones guest stars include Patrick Baladi, Kelly Osbourne, James Fleet, Denise Van Outen, Tony Robinson, Christopher Bisson, Christopher Cazenove, Honor Blackman, Michelle Collins, Darius Danesh and Trevor Peacock

It’s time to check in again at the five-star luxury hotel that has it all – glamour, scandal, passion and intrigue.

Times are tough at Babylon, the brilliant new manager, Juliet Miller, nicknamed “The Undertaker”, is charged with preparing the hotel for sale. Then, who should stroll in through the hotel doors but dishy, multi-millionaire playboy Sam Franklin – Juliet’s once penniless ex-husband. Setting hearts a flutter, he soon seems interested in more than just a suite at the hotel.

Meanwhile, it’s down to the staff to keep Hotel Babylon afloat: the ever-charming concierge Tony; newly-promoted head of housekeeping Tanya; flamboyant head barman Gino; the even more flamboyant receptionist, Ben; and, keeping tongues wagging, a now heavily-pregnant head receptionist Anna.

Together, the team face a terrorist threat that grips London; see two arch rival boxers booked into its suites; host a celebrity magazine shoot and stage a fabulous Bollywood style wedding – all accompanied by the usual Hotel Babylon schemes, antics and affairs. As Sam’s interest in the hotel – and Juliet – grows, she is determined not to let him get under her skin again. But with so much unfinished business between them, will she be able to stop herself?

Forget the ever more depressing news on the televion, ignore the poor summer weather and just put your feet up relax with a glass of wine while the Hotel Babylon team make you laugh out loud at the antics of Gino the head barman and james the pompous restaurant manager as they compete to be top dog.
Enjoy the money making scams of Tony the ultra smooth concierge who acts as father and sometimes partner in crime to the rest of staff, go deep into the cellars and see how the staff really live and what they think of us the paying public.
follow as the on off romance between the new owner of Babylon and his manager who happens to be his ex wife as they continue to step on each others toes trying to run this 5 star hotel whilst trying to deny a spark still exists between them.
The story lines are at times deliciously improbable, however big stars like joan collins and others drift in and out to add realism to the fantasy, It's a pity the hotel doesnt really exist!
put this glitzy, glamorous story on when your tired & fed up, it's a great pick me up, pure escapism coupled with comedy at its very best.

Running out of steam 30 Jan 2010
Format:DVD
I have been a fan of earlier Hotel Babylon series, but season 4 was disappointing. Characters are constantly changing and plot lines are becoming more and more fantastic. Anna's disappearance from the series is more like something out of a a pantomime than real life. It is difficult to believe that any hotel could operate with this degree of disorganisation and tomfoolery on the part of its staff!

*MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS*

I picked up Hotel Babylon the other day and I must say I haven't been able to put it down. Its been a pure gem to watch, with great stories, acting, drama and comedy all at the same time Hotel Babylon really does have something for everyone.
I must say I was particually impressed by the third episode in which all the members of the hotel, along with other customers start hunting for missing jewels. Its truly an episode of drama-comedy you would never miss.

The programme itself, is never too serious (and too be honest the only reason it has a '15' certificate is because it has scenes of a sexual nature) so therefore it is mainly a light-hearted comedy-drama that you can enjoy over and over again. With a star studded cast, including Dexter Fletcher and Michael Obiora, Hotel Babylon is truly one to watch.

This is how a good comedy-drama should be done. Its glamorous, funny, luxurious and a whole lot of fun. A must buy for all everyone, a previous fan of the programme or not - and at this bargain price, why not?
