Product Description

The HOTBIN EXTRA model is sold as a 'starter pack' with a number of additional items to help you get your HOTBIN up and running as quickly as possible. Extras include a 25 litre bag of bulking agent (composted wood chip) to use with food waste composting, an internal thermometer for tracking the temperatures in the top layers of waste, a raking stick, a winter 'kick start' heater and two cam straps to secure the door when the HOTBIN is filled.

The HOTBIN has been designed to replicate nature by creating the optimum conditions to make hot composting easy. Heat is generated by the bacteria breaking down the waste and the HOTBIN retains this heat so the bacteria keep working fast - providing you with fast successful composting.

Your HOTBIN comes ready assembled and includes a lid thermometer so you can keep an eye on the temperature, an airtight lid to reduce smells and unwanted visitors, an aeration valve to moderate the temperatures and a bio-filter to stop any unfriendly odours.

The 50mm thick insulated walls help to maintain the high internal temperatures to aid rapid composting, while the aeration plate disperses the air through the bin. There is also an easy to remove front hatch to access your mature compost.

The HOTBIN User Guide included will help you get started in no time. However, should you need any more help, hotbincomposting.com offers FREE online support and the HOTBIN team are happy to answer any questions.

DELIVERY: We currently charge 30 for delivery across the whole of the UK, however if you live in the UK Mainland this will be refunded as soon as your order is shipped.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow starter but now in full swing! 4 Feb 2013

I got this just after Christmas and it was snowing the day after I had set it up so I didn't see much happen for two weeks. But now (under a month later) I get a composty steam facial when I open the lid to 'feed' it. I use around 50% cardboard and shredded paper and 45% food waste and 5% composted bark (which came with the order). I add a 2lt bucket of food waste 2 times a week (more if I can). I am looking forward to the spring, summer and autumn when I can add my garden waste to it.

Its a great size (wheelie bin size) so it doesn't take up much space and it not too tall (I am 5'1"). The raking stick is very useful as it easily combines the new material with the stuff below (I do get concerned with damaging the inside walls, so I am careful). The extra thermometer is also an asset as the lid thermometer (so far) is always half the temperature (30 degrees Centigrade) of the material inside the bin (60 degrees Centigrade).

It is very light once all the extra items are removed (e.g. the composted bark bag) so I could move it easily.
The delivery time said it wouldn't arrive for 3 weeks but it was only 1 week.

My only advise with this is to be patient and be consistent in 'feeding' it twice a week.

4.0 out of 5 stars Starting in winter 9 Feb 2013

Only had the bin for three weeks and really too cold to start it with frosts and temp not getting above 3 C. However got it going a week ago using the hot water bottle and now with the hwb out its up to 20C which is not bad. Now got chicken pellets to add to the mixture and will monitor the temp over the coming weeks, But verdict.. it looks promising and with more green stuff from the gardem should do well
Very impressed by build which seems tough .

5.0 out of 5 stars A great product! 13 Dec 2013

Very impressed with this product. Installed in November, filled it to the brim with garden waste, the mulch provided and leaves and with the aid of the hot water bottle, bin was soon heating up. Had to open air vent at top as temperature was up to 70 degrees F with 4/5 days.

Level of contents going down so keep topping up with kitchen waste.

Very pleased with this product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Happy gardener 20 Jun 2013

Very happy with its appearance and composting capacity. It is greedy and needs constant feeding which is not a problem when there is plenty of kitchen and garden waste. Had to raid the market bins in he winter to keep it fed. It only heats up really well when the weather is warmer. Stirring it up helps too, but that is quite a messy business and hard work but worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's hot! 7 Aug 2013

At first I was sceptical and used the hot water bottle. All the waste I put in initially was tinder dry so I did add some water (less than half a litre per day for about 3 days). At first I opened the vent so I could see there was a hole and it lost heat, now I realise that it just has to be pushed in a touch and now it is merrily steaming away at 60 degrees with no help. The contents are now damp and I have started to use some of the chippings but everything smells nice in there and it is all rotting away. Despite the fact in the 3 weeks I have had it I have put in the equivalent of at least 2 binfuls of waste it has rotted down to just half a bin! I have started to put in lots of no good windfall apples and it now smells of cider in there. With the dry weather there hasn't been much in the way of grass cuttings but there will be some more put in soon. I shall put in a progress report in a few months time. At this point in time I am very impressed. The bin looks smart and although I did have a gripe about the lid dropping down on my head this hasn't happened the last couple of times I have been in there.
