When this new Hot Wheels program arrived, our testers couldn't wait to try it out, especially when the packaging claimed kids could build their own race courses and make "barricades" and "buildings" for crashing cars. Children were, however, very disappointed to find out that these race courses were paper creations, rather than onscreen race tracks, and that the decorating options for their vehicles were quite limited and difficult to use. Play begins in Hot Wheels City where kids can go to one of four locations. In the garage, children can paint a car or customize one by adding tires, engines, and roof racks. Testers had a hard time figuring out how to use the creativity tools and quickly grew tired of the limited painting features and decals.
In the Print Shop, children can design and print stickers, business cards and letterhead, and in the Department of Motor Vehicles, they can make driver's licenses, license plates and traffic tickets. While the design options are easier to use in these areas, they are still limited in number and generally leave children wanting more. Finally, in Victory Lane, kids can choose pennants, banners and trophies to print, but we couldn't find any decorating options and wondered where to go next to create our race tracks. Unfortunately, there was nowhere to go, leaving us with a few good looking cars and accessories but no place in the program to try them out.
Considering the program's limitations, and even though it comes with an actual Hot Wheels vehicle to decorate, we'd steer clear of this one.
