* Think of any record at all that was made in Los Angeles in the 1960s and there's a fair to definite chance that Jerry Cole played on it (the "Pet Sounds" album being just one of a list of landmark recordings in which Cole participated). When he wasn't in the studio cutting other people's records, or touring as part of the hit instrumental group the Champs, he was busy knocking out groovy instrumental albums, under a plethora of aliases, for Modern's budget Crown label (among others).
* "Hot Rod Twangin'" offers a sampling from almost a dozen albums that Cole cut pseudonymously for Crown, and shows that there was no style of music that the man could not comfortably embrace - from the Ventures to Booker T & the MGs, he and his session cronies could do the lot.
* Compiled by Texan axeman and general guitar fanatic `Burnin' Mike Vernon and released with the approval and participation of Jerry himself, this is a package that no lover of instrumental 60s rock`n'roll can afford to be without.

Exploito guitar action from the surf age,

Jerry Cole was a very busy man in the early sixties. Apart from playing in the Champs (you all know Tequila) and his own band the Spacemen, he knocked out a stream of cheap surf and hot rod cash-in records for Crown Records.
Amazingly they are all worthwhile with at the very least one stone-cold classic and often more than one on each one. Don't expect distortion or psych flourishes. That would come later. Instead what we have here are pure toned, hard rocking, sun-flecked fun-packed devotions to the joy of being young in California when everything was going right. A killer rhythm section behind him and a wild sax and Cole is the god of good times. If you like Gary Usher, Billy Strange, Lee Hazelwood or (inevitably) the Beach Boys then you wil love this. He later went on the become the Animated Egg - but that's another story.

early 60's hot rod instrumental music,
By COMPUTERJAZZMAN "computerjazzman" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Hot Rod Twangin' (Audio CD)
Jerry cole was/is a great L.A. session musician, who has played with everybody from The Beach Boys, to Elvis and Frank Sinatra. He also released some albums back in the early 60's on the low-budget L.A. Crown label (which was owned by the Bihari Brothers, who also owned the Modern label). These albums were usually sold in the supermarket in the 99 cent bin, they had pictures of hot rods and custom cars on them, and had names like The Hot Rodders, The Scramblers, The Winners, and The Blasters. This CD features 24 cuts from those old albums, they are all 60's instrumental hot rod music, complete with the sound of engines revving inthe background of the songs. Another good CD to get is Jerry Cole and his Spacemen, which is more surf music oriented.
