This book was published 23 years ago - and it shows. Pace slow; uneventful denouement; one shock. If I had been reading (rather than listening to) the book, I would definitely have put it aside, but Tony Britton could read the telephone directory and I would listen. But don't expect excitement. Characterization of main character and narrator nice, but far too many characters. Lazy novel.

a great romp 30 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
An adventure about a family and their failings. Typical Francis a good read. Malcolm Pembroke is a rich man with a large family and some ex wives. He is under threat so he needs to find one of his children he can trust. The family is unloveable and dysfunctional - money clearly does not buy happiness. Despite their difficulties you come to care about their fates as you consider one or other as a potential murderer. There is always a hores or two but this in not about the seamy side of racing and perhpas the horses are the most loveable characters. I love this book and bought this to replace a much revisited copy that has finally disintegrated!

This is my favourite Dick Francis novel of all; I have read it so many times my copy is falling apart. Fighting family members, with all their motivations very well explored and believable - and, of course, horses.
