Format:Audio CD
Numerous jazz artists over the years have tried to combine the jazz group with the orchestra, to varying effects. Bill Evans' album "With Symphony Orchestra" springs to mind. But Marsalis takes it to a whole new level. His mastery of the standards here shows us that he's a deep down jazzer, but his ease with the symphony orchestra suggests a comfort with the classical world. The arrangements are simply divine, with the jazz guys ducking and diving between various metres and various keys, and all whilst being rock-solid in what they're doing. Out of all the jazz/orchestra recordings, this is one of the very best.
