The Killers might hail from one of the USA's most quintessentially American cities (Las Vegas), but their debut album Hot Fuss displays an Anglophilic streak that is an ocean wide. Steeped in the back-catalogue of the Smiths and Pulp, with broad 80s synth sweeps cloaking each tale of fraught metrosexual romance, this band clearly rate the swoon over the swagger. Still, this is almost entirely an upbeat record, one made for the packed club than the smoky VIP room; in particular "On Top", "Somebody Told Me" and "Mr Brightside" are tremendous examples of breathless indie-pop that gallop along like a lovestuck heartbeat with frontman Brandon Flowers gasping for breath on the claustrophobic disco floor. This is, inarguably, what the Killers do best. Even when they deviate from form they’ve got a few neat ideas--see the gospel choir that echoes back Flowers' repeated exclamation "I've got soul/ But I'm not a soldier" on "All These Things I've Done", or the self-consciously epic "Indie Rock'n'Roll", delivered by the Killers with all the fireworks and gusto of a curtain-closing Broadway showtune. --Louis Pattison

The Killers are cool. With "Somebody Told Me" they've made one of the singles of the year. And this debut album shows they have most of the things you need for a great band.
For a start you need a great singer. Brandon Flowers fits the bill perfectly. He's got charisma, commitment and a unique vocal style. All the Killers look good, with that scruffy unfashionable glamour that all the best bands have. And it helps if you have a great drummer. Ronnie Vanucci's infectious energy powers along the best tracks here.
The music is big, bold and confident. Clearly their influences are from 80s rock but they've put them together to create something of their own. "Mr Brightside" bounces along like The Cure on steroids but without the self-pity. The only thing they really have in common with Robert Smith's crew is the wobbly synthesizers which they use as an occasional texture. "Smile Like You Mean It" swaggers like early U2, but Bono's sincerity is replaced with a far more satisfying cynicism. "Andy, You're A Star" is classic wiry (and Wire-y) bump and grind track, while "Glamorous Indie Rock 'N' Roll" combines power riffing, a big chorus and tongue in cheek lyrics. It will surely sound perfect in big stadiums.
The Killers haven't quite got everything right on Hot Fuss. There are two or three weak songs, and the production could have been more imaginative. On the final track "Everything Will Be Alright" the wobbly synthesisers take over completely for a bizarre ballad finale. I can't decide whether this is a stroke of genius or a ghastly mistake. And I reckon Hot Fuss is a terrible title for an album.
But the band does sound ambitious and hungry to progress to bigger and better things. And with good reason, they've certainly got the potential to get there. --Nick Reynolds

These guys are the best band I have heard in 25 years. I'm 42 now and can honestly say this. Buy both CD's - Hot Fuss and Sam's Town. If anything, buy Hot Fuss for track 7 alone! Heard this song ("On Top") for the first time while watching their set at Glastonbury last week (June 23, 2007) and it made my hair curl!! Both CD's are filled with outstanding tracks. Buy both and crank up the volume and imagine your favourite bands of the 70's and 80's and you are there!! Brilliant - on CD and Live!

I've got to start by saying that I rarely give anything 5 stars, if I could, I would give this album 6! It is just fantastic. If you haven't heard it, what the hell are you waiting for!? The stand out tracks for me were, Jenny was a friend of mine, Mr. Brightside, Somebody told me, Andy You're a star, Indie Rock and Roll and Everything Will be Alright. Usually when I listen to an album, there are 1 or 2 stand out tracks but in the case of Hot Fuss, I've chosen about half the album and there are still a couple more that I feel should be in there. In conclusion, a truely amazing album that has barely left my CD player since I bought it. Every single track is very, very good (I nearly put them all as stand out tracks but that would have been a bit pointless...)

The Killers are, quite simply, a breath of fresh air. In amongst the drab 'pop' that the likes of Westlife, Girls Aloud and - dare I say it - Crazy Frog that makes up the laughable charts right now, we have a saviour, a band that will pull our music scene out of these dark, dark ages. And that band is the Killers, with their refreshing blend of indie-rock and eighties electro-pop. When The Killers first blasted onto the indie scene, and all the indie kids at college started banging on about them, I couldn't have cared less - me, jump on the bandwagon? No way. But when I got given the album on my birthday, I thought, what harm could it do? Well, it certainly ruined my cool attitude towards them. Suddenly, through the raw passion of 'Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine', I couldn't stop listening. The CD has been in my player ever since, meaning it's knocking on 8 months now. This album is chock-a-block with fabulous songs - 'Andy, You're A Star' is just one of many. The crunching guitar at the beginning, coupled only by Brandon Flower's powerful vocals sets the scene for a far-too-short song full of the drama of unrequited love. 'Glamorous Indie Rock 'n' Roll' sums up The Killers' sound entirely, building to a crescendo not even the Kaiser Chiefs could pull off. The sublime 'Mr. Brightside', arguably the best track, manages to get away with obvious repetition simply because of the anguish in Flowers' voice as he sings of discovered betrayal. You can barely tell there's really only one verse because the emotion in the second repetition is huge.
It's silly to gush about a band so much, as it can lead to so much disappointment (The Darkness, anyone?). Yet The Killers are worthy. They know what they're doing, where they're going and what is needed to make a whole album full of possible singles and modern classics. If they carry on like this, I daresay they will grab the crown off of... well, they will INVENT the crown for Glamorous Indie Rock And Roll, because this sound didn't EXIST until The Killers came along. Discover and be converted!

Brilliant
It took abit for me to get into the Killers but as soon as I bought this cd I was hooked, there are so many excellent tracks on here that it is a must buy.

Hot Fuss
Would have given this about 3½ stars, but rounded it up as it is a good album, some catchy tunes. Not bad, Mr Brightside, Smile like you mean it are amongst the highlights.

Reminds me of the 80's
