Anyone who is familiar with the artist Oliver 'Zack' Frey will know exactly what to expect from this homo-erotic volume of storytelling and fantastic artwork. Zack was one of the leading artists for such publications as Him International and a summary of his growth through the gay publication media can be found in the foreword, which ironically is taken from Rogue-The Collected Stories which I have also written a review on.
This volume, produced by Bruno Gmunder, reproduces a collection of stories featuring Zack's iconic character, Rogue. As an individual who finds himself in a number of situations leading to erotic encounters, the stories encapsulate the fantasies of the young gay man of the 80's who would loved to have found himself in a similar situation (who knows, maybe some men did!).
The artwork is basically pen and ink and coloured with a waterwash which gives an excellent finish and the poses of the characters are reminiscent of fellow erotic artist, Tom of Finland, whose original artwork was similar to some degree but became more fine during the later pieces.
Generally, the stories are two or three pages long but this is enough as it gives the reader the time to savour the artwork. Upcoming homo-erotic artists could learn a lot from Zack and Tom. Connoiseurs of homo-erotic art cannot go wrong with this latest volume of sexy adventures from Zack.
Caution - this book contains homo-erotic stories and artwork which is not suitable for youngsters and if you are offended by male sex then this book is not for you... but it would make a great gift for a gay male friend.

This is a great book as a collection because it shows in COLOUR the sexual adventures of Rogue. My only criticism, and disappointment, is that it is missing The Package Story board. Otherwise it is great to see all these previously, mainly black & white, stories collected together in one volume and now in colour. Also the foreword that it was all based on a real man and his recollections to the artist makes it even more enjoyable, as it is a cartoon biopic of sexual debauchery that almost jumps out of the page at the reader.

This volume reprints 90 pages of full-colour Rogue comic strips (emphasis on the strip) created by Zack (Oliver Frey), which began publication in the late 1970s. They were originally published primarily in monochrome but are presented here in full-colour. There appear to be 29 strips, ranging from 2-pages to one story at 8; though some of the smaller ones form serials. They feature "The Sexy Adventures of Rogue", and live up to their name, as the artist is a superb craftsman, as well as an able storyteller. These are not just explicit sexual adventures, as they were originally published in `over the counter' magazines, so had to stay within certain boundaries - primarily no male erections - and so Zack mastered the art of horizontal rather than vertical depictions of male genitalia, all the while designing the story panels so that this feature did not stand out in any way, distracting the viewer with the action within the panel. These stories are erotic without being `just' explicit action scenes, as Zack is far too skilled an artist and storyteller to just throw images at the reader. There is superb craftsmanship on display in the stories here, as well as gay male sex. This is an excellent collection of gay male erotica, and is just the first of several volumes of this artist'

These comics by Zack are totally mind-blowing! I remember many of them from the 1980s in Him magazine, but here they have been reworked in colour and the results are quite simply superb. The stories are highly inventive and about as erotic as you can imagine; the visuals and the narrative go together brilliantly. Let's hope Bruno Gmunder may publish other gay comics that would more than deserve such quality reproduction - say by Blade or Teddy of Paris, or Brad Parker? There are so many great things that deserve to be brought to a new and wider readership than they could reach in the past ... but Zack/Rogue is a brilliant start!
