OK, point taken, this is no 'Don't be Daft 2' (This reviewer didn't rate that album that highly), it's something far richer and progressive. Finally a 'dance band' prepared to take a risk and develop their style into something more mature and intelligent.

On first listening you may be disappointed (Track 1 is not particularly inspiring but sits neatly as a great opener), but persevere and this album may just become a personal favourite. The (repetitive) 70's glam samples have been replaced by an astoundingly eclectic series of tracks. The almost beautiful classic melancholy 'Beautiful Crazy' to the 70's garage rock sound of 'Middlesboogie' (are they really singing "Jim, Jim, gimme a wheelspin"?) are strokes of pure genius. Don't expect to be dancing around your kitchen for 50 odd minutes, but stick this on in a crowded room and I guarantee you'll get people asking about it.

Some albums you play twice and consign to CD limbo; some you just keep coming back to. This is one of those. Come on you other reviewers, give it another listen and you may just surprise yourselves - I've bought this album for people and it's always been a success. I can't wait to see what this bunch of nutters do next - and take note rest of Skint crew (especially you, Mr. Slim) this is how to really progress your sound - they deserve to run and run. Crap sleeve though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Begging to be heard ! 6 Nov 2001

The first album : 'dont be daft' suffered from excess glam influence and the band seemed unable to know when to cut a sample out and get on with a song. Hot cakes is ... HOT and couldn't be more different. Stick with it and you will favour it more and more. This is a party masterpiece with more gentle but equally valuable songs interspersed - it reflects some sublime writing ability. Great lyrics should bring a smile, great beats should bring about at least some foot tapping. Buy it for yourself and the friends you like !

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to the usual standard boys 1 Mar 2001

What a shame. After dancing round the kitchen for the best part of a year listening to their brilliant first album 'Don't Be Daft' this was a real let down. I wouldn't say it's awful, there's just nothing particularly memorable on here - in fact some are pretty irritating. I'd strongly recommend buying the first album, forgetting about this one and waiting for the next release.
